buddy just got this car and ran good first few miles he drove it. then fired up 1 day and clanging like crazy and poping . he sut it right down.

i look and listen to it and no pump up on lifters . dry in heads no oil . but mech gauge showed 60 psi on or OFF :eek1: ( problem 1 to fix ) . checked oil level off and running no change . figure pickup tube off pump.

also just got the motor out tonight and pan off. found this ? ? ? ? :dunno:

no dents in pan and tube tight in pump. angle a little off if you ask me. and looks like crank throw skimmed the tube a tiny bit .

also found it to be a tall deck 427 as per the intake spacers and casting # on the back of the block comes to 427 truck tall deck . got forged crank also with fat parting line . going to run casting # on crank to verify also in daylight.

Sounds like an oil passage is plugged.

Maybe the screen got turned when they installed the pan? :dunno:

cheep ass 1.5" sunpro 50 buck set of gauges from years ago.

and we were thinking same problem . didnt angle the pan around pickup and twisted it up . newer aftermarket pan on it.

and some sort of red rtv or sealent between the pickup tube and pump body / hole.

will know more in daylight thursday.

found out the prev person smacked the car pan on and didnt finess it on around the pickup. this clocked it up . had 2 marks on the windage tray in the pan were thay rubbed it.

also in the day light found the pickup tube was so close it was geting hit by the rod bolt. :eek1: and it was only in the pump 1/2 way.

got new one set in / level and 2 tack welds. :thumb: also 1/2" clearence off pan floor.

primed up the motor with dummy dist gutted and drill . its got oil flow now and pressure. 10-40 oil in it and budy had little fun holding thumb over mech oil pressure port by filter boss when i had the drill going full power. :D

maybe a stupid thought...... but.... is the distributor / pump drive the same on a tall deck ???

maybe the drive gear is not engaging the pump tang ??:dunno::dunno:

Found this on the web.......

------------------------------------------------------------------

So the drive part number you list is totally different than a standard dist for a small block or big block.
IS-77B is 6.53 long .479 dia and has a different type tooth engagement. than the standard for a BBC that is a IS-77 is 6.72 long .483 dia

So the distributor from a standard SBC or BBC will not work. It will not even engage in the oil pump drive shaft.

We are right back to square one.

YOU MUST USE A DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTOR IN A TALL DECK BBC BLOCK.

did you read the posts and see pics ? ? ? :dunno: we found problem.

and it has a msd adj hight pro billit in it.

good info tho on tall deck specific stuff. i did know that tho. thats how i spoted the tall deck with the hood up. has intake spacer kit for short deck intake on it.

Some of the tall deck BBC used timing gears instead of a chain too,so the cam and dizzy gears are reverse rotation compared to the typical ones...:doah:..

fired up tonight and clinking for a few min on right bank . but once warm and coolent threw block it all went away . lifters needed big time pump up i guess.

got the o.k. to order 3 new QUALITY autometer gauges for it. as the crap ones are JUNK . then on to fixing all the little odd's and ends O.M.G :doah:
