That brake line looks really tight around the frame also.. Hard to tell, is there gonna be room for the headers to move when the engine torques and not smash that line?
 
First few trips out I'd keep a good eye on how the brakes feel. That's pretty much the one thing you dont want problems with in the car. Long pedal gets you into trouble, brakes/steering get you out.

Where does that line go? Which brakes will be affected?

I don't remember are you running rubber body bushings? Wondering if there's enough slack in that line so that when things start to move it's not gonna chafe on the frame.

Ordered some heat sleeve or "wrap" this morning.
Should be here later this week. Looks like covid shipping times are still tough.
The brake line is in its factory spot and the headers weren't much different in clearance then the old ones.
I think this car was put together as it is now in the mid 90s (pure guess) but the PO bought it around then and it was freshly painted and he did the motor in the late 90s.
Basically I can't really see it being a problem and I think I'm overreacting.
But since this car will see some form of competition I want to address some things now. A small heat shield and a wrapped brake line certainly won't hurt matters none.

It's the brake line to the passenger side front. Body bushings are stock. Should be no issue there. Shouldn't be any chaffing, the line uses the factory clips and I have a whole slew of new p clamps it will be getting.

I don't think I want to move it at this time. I think a wrap/heat shield will do the trick.
I will be doing a full chassis in the future. It can be something I mess with at that time.


Getting closer. My white board list is getting smaller.
And my known "to purchase" list is getting shorter and shorter.

Yep. Got me for axles, spider gears, battery tray, some miscellaneous hardware, u joints, sandblasting on the axle, headers, x pipe, mufflers, trans crossmember, Probably some crap I don't remember already. All things I had not planned on buying/changing but allowed it to snowball...
 
Plan for a build...
Make a timeframe then double it.
Make a budget then double it.

Only way to avoid disappointment is to put no expectations on it!
I told my wife I was going to do this phase of the build for 10k

Yep, let's go with that. Hehe.

In all honesty, I won't quite be doubling down on this part. I won't hit 20k right now... But I was around 15 the last time I added receipts. And I thought I could do this work in 3 months. I'm at 4 now and rapidly coming to the end.....
 
What's it cost in today's money to restore a muscle car? 30k? 40k?

I really don't know.

I know when I look at cars I know a good deal when I see one.

I have this insured for 25k right now.
Hagerty said they had no problems insuring it for 35k sight unseen.
Anymore would need some picture back up due to it only be a lowly Malibu. Lol

If a tree fell on it tomorrow I would still make money at 25k so I'm ok.
Not that I look at it like that.
I plan to bring home my next baby in this car (although logistically that may not work out) and I plan to have it the rest of my life.

Really depends on the car you start with and level of resto you’re going for I guess. 30-40 in parts alone could be possible. Throw in high quality resto shops at $100/hr and you’re into the 100-200 range easily.

I was using a do-it-yourself metric.

Obviously the sky's the limit, but I think you could restore a shitbox for 30 to 40K doing on most of the work yourself
Making a presentable car that ran and drove good.
