this is probably a total newb question but ive always wanted to know...

what is the proper way to put the two nuts and washer on after putting the bearing in the hub of a 10 bolt?! it seems no matter what i do, hand tight, real tight whatever it always backs out on me. i know all about the little nipple on the first nut then getting the washer to slide on it but it still comes loose.

the way i usually do it isthe inside one goes on hand tight, slide the washer on then tighten the outside one kinda tight

this seems to be what im looking for

torque the first inner nut to 50 foot pounds to seat the bearings and back off to 35.
that nut you just put on has a little tit on it which needs to line up with the locking ring as afore mentioned.

once you get that lined up and smooth so it doesnt rock back and forth! thats bad! then you can tighten the outer nut to tight as hell.

i have a haynes and it doesnt tell you squat. first time i tore this thing apart years ago i didnt know what the heck went where and that book didnt help at all

It's pretty easy to do.. when your torquing the inner nut, spin the hub at the same time. The outer nut should be torqued to 160 ft lbs minimum on the 81-91 trucks according my book.

I just did mine on my 89 Suburban, I think the previous owner didn't bother with torquing the nuts right.. they were finger tight :eek1:

thats pretty much how i been doing it. i think i end up making the inside one to loose cause i always end up having to back it off a little bit to line up the notch. but checked it last night when putting it back on the trailer the hub was loose. made it through the year though

Why are you backing off the outer nut? Once it's torqued your good.

cause you have to get it so the little notch on the washer lines up with the thing that sticks out of the nut. if its to tight the hub doesnt want to spin, if its to loose it backs off. i did them both today as was described. we'll see how it holds up :)

The outer nut doesn't have to line up with anything. You must be installing them in the wrong order.

i was talking about the first nut. it has that little nipple that sticks outward that the washer has to slide on.

The washer should have a bunch of holes on it to line it up.. when I redid the ones in my '89 I used a whole new spindle nut kit on each side to be safe since they were so loose when I took them off.
