belhousing bolt removal suggestions

just a little tip... find a snapon dealer or go to snapon.com
there's a 24 and 36" extension that's half inch on one end and 3/8 on the other, guess what its for?.. you got it, trannies.... makes the job a piece of cake especially with a 3/8" impact swivel socket in the side you need..

I have always done the top two from the top. With the Dist. out, straddle engine, go finger tight, then tighten with a box end wrench or two. If you have a universal joint or wobbly socket and 2-3 feet of extensions, you can usually get them from the bottom.........just my .02.

first, i have no use for the snap on dealer, i havent bought anything from him in over a year. despite dropping 4K on him the previous year he wont even acknowledge that he knows me. so, i steer clear of his truck... and even if i did deal with him, i cant wait until Thursday, i need this thing done sooner than that.

it was a little humor, sorry it was so dry, i happen to be a dealer lol... but those extensions are available just about anywheres and they work great, but since you have the removeable hump its all good..

and..

You need not remove the seat to get the tunnel off, though it does make it easier..you'll need a thin chisel to pry it up, and perhaps a propane torch to soften up the sticky goo GM sealed it to the cab with--its almost like a weld!..

I usually use the long extentions under the truck myself..sometimes corrosion does make that trick fail--you lose a lot of torque in the long extentions, and even an impact gun does little to help there..but the bolts are easily accessible thru the tunnel hole--my 74 had a body lift, which made for easy access with the long extensions, but I coud not budge them, they were tight and rusted too..once I got the tunnel off,it was easy as pie..

I have done them the "hard way" from above under the hood too,by using one wrench looped over another for leverage..I'd much rather do it from inside or below though..those bolts suck to get at from above..

well, had my floor mat been worth leaving intact, i would have had to remove the seat in order to get it out. instead, i just cut it as it's trashed anyways. i took the hump out, and it doesnt seem to have done me any good. i dont have enough room to get my fingers between the hellhousng and the floor, much less any sort of tool. i think i'm going to use a combination of methods. through the hump, but dropping the back of the trans/case. i should be able to get it pretty easy then. it sucks working alone, and i cant very well work in it in the rain as its outside.

man that sucks you are having so much trouble. so you have real worn out body mounts or what?

i have a truck that has been pushing snow for 30 years now... i dont think there's anything on the truck thats not worn out. hell, i think the windows are even worn out.

got a wild hair up my ass today. took the old air hammer to the bolts, busted off the washers, then pounded the bolt extractors onto the head of the bolts. only got one left now, the very back one on the drivers side. weatherman says i have to wait until Saturday to get it off though. :(
