Are bell housing covers from the different trans. (TH400, TH350, etc..) interchangeable? In other words, will a cover from a TH350 fit on a TH400?

Do you mean the protective blanket things? Like drag racers use made of kevlar so the torque converter dont go though your leg? If thats what your talking about im sure they would interchange.

If you're talking about the convertor inspection cover then the TH350, TH400, and the 700R4 should all interchange.

make sure the bolt holes are the same size. Ive had so many different gm th350 trannies and have seen small bolts retain the cover, and ive seen big bolts. If the bolt holes in the tranny match the bolt holes in the cover, its a go. I believe all th700r4's and th400's have the bigger bolts that retain the cover.

The 4 small sheet metal screws are used on 2WD tranny's and the 6 large 3/8" bolts are used on 4WD tranny's.

The reason I'm asking, I want to add a cast aluminum cover that has the 2 bolt holes for the braces that go to the motor mounts. These and a brace bar between the transfer case and bell housing hopefully will keep my trans case from cracking.

Does your current tranny have 6 3/8" bolt holes for the cover or 4 small holes for sheet metal screws? If it only has the 4 small holes then i'm not sure if you can use the cast aluminum cover or not. There may not be enough trans case material to drill and tap the 6 bolt holes required to install the aluminum cover.

Really  ????

So my TH350 is a 2WD then  !

This kind of pisses me off. And now I find oot I got screwed by a member :angry1: !!

Dumb question: What's the difference between a 2WD TH350 and a 4WD TH350?

Yep, if your tranny only has 4 small holes it is a 2WD tranny case.

The 4WD trans uses a shorter output shaft (sure you knew that) the case is a bit thicker in the bell housing area and uses 6 3/8" bolts to fasten the aluminum convertor cover rather than 4 sheet metal screws to fasten either the plastic or sheet metal cover of a 2WD trans.

I bought a TH350/NP205 combo from a member here aboot a year ago.

It's installed in my rig. However my rig isn't street worthy yet because I'm still working on the brakes.

I specifically asked him, "Is it a 4WD TH350?"

He replied, "Yes". :mad::mad:

Man, this really pisses me off :angry1: !!

He probably thought you meant that it had the correct length output shaft to be used with a T-case. Don't get all worked up over this, the trans will still work as normal but just isn't as sturdy as a true 4WD trans case is. If you have the aluminum convertor cover see if you have the room to drill and tap for the 6 3/8" bolts that hold the cover on. If there's enough room then you're ok. If not then it means you either can't use the aluminum cover or you need to make whatever modification neccessary to use the cover so you can use the proper torque rods.

Why not just go with a frame mount for the 205 then? Should do the same thing, and probably more effective.

I agree, most people probably don't think about the converter cover when talking about a 2wd or 4wd trans.

I dont think theres anthing differnt about them structuraly I have had both cases sitting side by side and looked the same exept for the TC dust cover. Also I know a few people that have bought remans and got the 4 screw tin covers on 4wd trans.

You can drill and tap the holes to fit the cast cover, its easy, I've done it. On the 2wd tranny I had, I couldn't use all 6 holes though, I can't remember if I used 4 or 5, I'd have to go look under the truck to be sure.

A few guys on here have had the 2WD version and the 'K' case version right next to each other and have reported no discernable difference in bell thickness...

I think it was BadDog that broke a TH350 'K' case bell and had made a llot of these observations.

Personally I don't think 'K' case means jack as far a strength goes.

The early 4WD TH350 were regular cases. The "K" case came out sometime during the mid seventy.
BTW, I now have a "K" TH400 now and need an torque converter cover. What is the part number for the cover?

the bellhousing from 2wd to 4wd is the same casting, no differences what so ever in thickness. Ive had at least almost a dozen th350's from different vehicles over the years, seen alot of cracked th350's in 2wd's and 4wd's. There's a cracked K case on my sideyard right now that still works but the bell is cracked all the way around from dowel pin to the starter area. Got another cracked th350 on my sideyard where the 205 fell off the back of it. The sheetmetal skrews for the cover might be true for a 2wd version.

I don't use the covers anymore, I pulled mine once when I felt a vibe after powerwashing the whole truck and found out that mud had pressed itself in there from when i was stuck in a mud pit and ripped off all the weights on the torque convertor when the mud dried and had to be replaced.

The cover is missing on my POS 77' K30, and I have been thinking of trying to find one.

Now at least I know what the part is called. (newbie I know)

So I take it that the cover may not be necessary?

Looks like running without the cover shouldn't be much of a problem, unless you have rocks or stumps?

Think I'll wait to see what I end up doing with the 77'.

The aluminum cover found on 4WD tranny's helps to strengthen the case as well as provide the place for the strut rods to bolt up which is another reason to run the cover.
