I am looking for a project vehical, im not looking to dropping 10k or anything, just something to be a vehical to mess around in, what other vehicals out there have a ton of parts that come at a resonable price, what other good prject vehicals are out there.

Camaro
Chevelle
Nova
Tri Five shoeboxes
Mustang
Ford frame and body based small block powered streetrods

You can buy or build almost everything . All you need is a frame and a little bit of the cowl , the aftermarket stocks it all for these , many stock a whole body minus the cowl ( you register it as it was ) .

Then in trucks :

Subs
Pickups
Toyota Solid and IFS
Nissan/Datsun bulletsides and hardbodies

Oh my bad, i was talking about 4x4 vehicals, for trail use, nothing major though

Then pick the Toyota , and drop a S10 V6 and 4l60e in it . A guy I knew had one with 5.29 gears , and could roast the Swampers at truck night in the parking lot , then wheel all day the next day .

In 32 years or wheeling Ive owned 5 Blazers,3 Landcruisers,4 Cj`s,5 XJ jeeps,4 toyota 4wds,a 4wd van,7 full sized 4wd trucks including 2 Cumming Dodges,a 4 runner and Montero.
The cheapest bang for the buck is a full sized Blazer although most Ive looked at in the last 2 months were pretty beat. A Jeep Cherokee mid 90ies H.O. version is a great vehicle. Its not possible there made anywhere close to the same assembly line dung pot YJ`s and TJ`s were. XJ`s are cheap, plentiful for aftermarket. Next a full sized truck as long as its not dodge, then pre 86 Toyota 4wd which are getting hard to find. LC`s have become way to expensive and late TJ types are way overpriced for a lot of nothing. The 4.0s are the only good part of a late jeep and now thats one for a mini van V6. Ever see a Jeep trophy cup like Rover runs? Bwahhaaaaaaaa.
Cherokee`s are relatively cheap, seat 4-5 pack groceries, are comfy but not to small,4.0 and AW4 trans are indestructible.
Its only money, there all gonna drain your wallet dry eventually ya know.:haha:

The biggest problem with the Toyotas is that an engine swap is a almost a necessity. I really dig the Cherokees and they're far easier to find than a straight axle Toy. I may be biased, especially since I have a '93 XJ as my other trail toy right now.

If I had the extra money, time and space I'd go with a Samuri build. They have grown on me the last several years.

Ummm, why? The 22r is an awesome motor, albeit a relatively low power one (which I assume is why you feel a motor swap is a "necessity")
Sure they're "awesome" motors for a go-kart, but not for a truck. Then, if you want to get any decent power out of it, it would cost more than a swap. I guess if you compare it to a Sami engine, it's quite powerhouse.:haha:

They make ~100 hp and 130 ft. lbs., almost twice what a Sami motor makes.

And in the rocks, horsepower rarely matters. A 3000 lb. Toyota will walk over stuff that a 6000 lb. K5 makes look impossible.

And the 6000lb K5 will rip through mud that the 3000lb Toyota makes seem impossible. Big deal! I had a 2wd Toyota race truck (3080lbs) with a budget modded 22r, 5.13 gears in a 9", etc. It was still a PITA on hill climbs and was disappointing on graded roads unless downhill. Get the F over it! It's not like this is news to anybody that a 22r is gutless.:doah:

HP isnt always what works, ever take a romp in a Unimog? arguably the worlds best production off road vehicle if not that then the Pinzgauer if the Mog is to big. I dont think theres a best anything, just depends on what your needs. Sides if Jeep can get away with a turd 4 banger then gutless must be the way:rolleyes:.

X2! Seems like one of the first mods most of us like to do is get the most HP we can get out of an engine, especially if it for more than just rock crawling.:D

Nope, haven't gotten a romp in a 'mog, since nobody I know has one, nor a Pinz for that matter. I also haven't met anyone happy with their turd 4 banger in a Jeep, except a coupla old geasers that were puttin' around in flatties.:D Maybe you're just piling on for fun, Apache, but Chris and I tend to argue about everything. Never mind that I apparently am one of the few posting in this thread that think owning domestic junk is better than import junk. That is not a question of quality, we could argue that all day, it's a question of pride in what our country has built and an objection to the money that people send to foreign countries on a daily basis by buying imports. I have owned imports in the past, found their flaws, and decided it was better to spend my money on American iron than foreign tin.

Interesting, I don't particularly remember arguing anything with you but I do tend to do that ;)

Nothing personal about it, I like to argue things

Also, realize that my motor makes ~430 hp. I'm not saying horsepower is worthless, just that its overrated. Lower weight will make a rig a lot more capable than more power any day.

Go for the Jeep XJ or MJ. I daily drive a 99 XJ with a 5 inch lift. Drive it all week and four wheel it on the weekends. I also have a 91 Comanche (MJ) with an eight inch lift and 35 inch krawlers. I use it when I wanna four wheel fairly hard and not worry about breakage. These things are cheap and plentiful. Lifting and locking them is dirt cheap also. Just my .02 worth

I wont argue the American made part,I feel the same way. All our bikes are American made and 3 chevy trucks although the misses has a tacoma because she dosent fit comfortably anything else truck wise. Regarding Jeeps, just my $.02 here after the CJ went away and D/C took them over there a joke. The last TJ I had was bar none the biggest pile of S**T Ive ever owned in some 200 vehicles and it wasent a lemon either as it wasent the only post CJ type Jeep I had. My personal opinion is Damlier Chrysler and thier sales/managment/warranty honorability are an insult to the American auto industry. I do get pissed when I see 0 effort put forth to correct defects and arrogance to boot with some American products. IMO its why the big 3 are begging for a bailout, Ive been around Government fleet for years and was I po`ed when a local PD started buying Toyota Camarys for cruisers due to Fords unreliable junk at the time. Pretty sad, the BMW`s the motor cops all riding blow as well, as of the last 10 years BMW`s another overrated Koolaid guzzlers bike.
You want fast and nimble with low maint? Im sure Buell would love to build a cop special.
To each his own I suppose.
