Best brand and place to get fuel filters

Does anybody have a favorite place to get their spin-on fuel filters? Is Racor hands-down the best? What is a good size to run, 2 micron? This is what I've gathered from searches but can't seem to find where is a good place to buy them.

My current filter setup is a Purolator in-line filter before the electric pump to get all junk out, then the spin-on style filter after the pump. Do I need any more filtration than this if I run a very fine element in the spin-on? Keep in mind I'm starting with a brand new poly fuel cell with foam filling, all new fuel line, and will be running B100 biodiesel only in warm weather so no risk for clogging.

The # on the filter I have now is a Fram P3710 but I definitely do not want to buy Fram again.

Any tips on where to buy filters? Thanks!

This filter you have was the main filter, and the common filtration size is 10 micron for this one.
there is a secondary filter in the lifter valley under the intake, that one is supposed to be a 2 micron.
I guess if you are using it as secondary with one before it it would be fine with a 2 micron, if they offer them in that size.
I would go with Racor or a known factory filter (we just replaced some filters on a CAT engine and used CAT filters)

Strange, I don't recall a filter in the lifter valley when I disassembled the engine. Here's what it looked like when I took it apart, where should the filter be/have been?

I'm still not sure where I can buy a 2 micron spin-on Racor filter. Gomer's Diesel (usdieselparts.com) has filters, but it looks like they only sell a complete filter kit, not a replacement spin-on cartridge. I have a Purolator F20011 prefilter...hopefully the diesel fuel won't melt it. I can't seem to find what micron it is...I'm thinking 20, will that be a problem?

Sorry for the dumb questions, just trying to do this right the first time.:wink1:

There was a filter attached to the back of the intake manifold but I thought it was instead of the one on the firewall. I don't know about a secondary one.

2 micron is a good size. I think stock is 10 micron. Any major brand is supposed to be good. Racor is a good brand. they come in different sizes & microns. Cat filters are made by somebody else (Racor?). I think the best prices are on the internet and by the case (12).

Sorry if this isn't much. I'm not there yet in my build:o

I will take a pic of the setup I have, it's a smaller secondary filter hat fits under the intake.
A 2 micron with nothing before it will not last very long, you need to filte in stages a big filter with 10 or 20 micron then a smaller filter with 2 micron, you will rplace the primay more often so you wan it at a convenient location, the secondary could be in a tight spot since you don't need to replace it as often, although with the new ULSD problems with bacteria you might want to just for safety.:D
And don't take my info as anything more than hearsay, I am still learning about diesels I have only owned them for the past 6 years but I research a lot and have half a dozen of them from fifferent generations.:D

I'm running B100 biodiesel with a brand new fuel system (tank, lines, filters, etc.) so hopefully the 20 micron prefilter and 2 micron secondary (spin-on) will be sufficient. I can't seem to find where I can cross reference my Fram part number with the Racor # though. Seems like all Racor wants to sell is the complete filter unit, when all I need is a replacement element.

My guess from the 3710 that your filter now is a 10 micron.:D

Haha, good guess.:wink1: My problem is though (I know I'm dumbing you guys to death, sorry) where can I find what model # of Racor element I need in order to have the correct diameter, thread size, etc. that will fit on my current filter assembly? All I can find is the complete Racor units with element, housing, and everything. I just want the element!:o

Some how I hope to put the primary 10 micron filter somewhere between the fuel tank & where it hits the frame on the passenger side. Then a electric fuel pump to push the fuel all the way to the firewall where a 2 micron filter / water separator, heater, and lift pump will be.

Well I am no help, I tried a search and came out empty.
I will keep looking though since eventually that is what I want, unless the smaller secondary I have is a 2 micron then maybe we can find somehing from that one.
i will let you know tomorrow when i check it out.

99% of boats run Racor primaries... Some engines, mostly Onan, Kohler gennies, run secondary Racors...

Take a pic of the filter, I'll tell ya what the replacement element # is...

standard marine diesel stuff run 30 mic primaries, 10 mic secondaries.. But most of the new electronic injected stuff run 10, then 2...

Can't beat Racor.....

That's the Fram P3710, here's a stock pic, looking for the 2 micron replacement though:

I checked the secondary filter and it was P3711
I have not checked the numbers yet, I guess I'll do that now.
It is about 25% smaller in size and it goes just before the IP

Here is what I found on the secondary filter I have, half way thru the page Fram P3711:

http://www.okanaganfilter.com/cross_reference.html

And I found out it's a 10 micron, or at least the equivalent WIX 33358 is 10 micron.

I have a purolator 10 micron spin-on pre filter and a 2 micron racor after that...but it's on my K5 which is in storage. My Racor is the water separator type with the amber colored bowl that spins onto the bottom. I don't know if racor makes a 2 micron canister style filter. You may need the water separator housing and bowl to get that?

If my truck was closer I could just grab the numbers off of it for you. I'm gonna do a quick search in this forum though...i recall posting up my racor numbers before.

I may even have pic's. ;)

Would you by any chance have this one?
