best diesel conversion

yea i'm prob gonna sell it and get a cucv when i get situated in NE. looking for a mid point between texas and north dakota cause i'm gonna try to get on the oil rigs and i wanna be between texas and north dakota for job security.

ill keep it if i can but im most likely gonna need some cash quick if i get called out, might as well just sell it and get a cucv cause it might just be cheaper that way.:dunno:

Cucv all the way! Great start! FYI they are gutted interrior, no A/C, no radio, Carpet or insulation.

yea the cucv will work for me, they are all mechanical diesels right? i want as little electrical crap as possible. like he said dead battery and alternator and still running, thats awesome... i dont care for the a/c and ill throw a radio and some carpet in and lay some new paint down. i just want my gun rack :waytogo:

and yea were looking at either living in NE or CO so ill be between the big oil boom states.

Think of the future. Say you drop a crap load of money on your rig... Coil overs, Cummings , best of the best parts, etc...

The questions you have to ask yourself is...

If I lose my job, can I afford this? The parts if it breaks? The tools? How long would it take to find the parts if it did break? Say your on the trail and s*** breaks and you need to get off the trail ASAP because you work the next morning and it will take weeks till a new part arrives in the mail?

In my case, prob not...

Always think ahead!

iPhone has an auto correction that I hate with a passion... I'm also not a grammar nazi.

My only complaint with the 4bt is immediate parts availability. Try getting an injector pump while you are on the side of the road. Now try to get something for the 6.2 or 6.5

Also keep in mind cost of conversion. All the reasons to have a diesel. (Which I'd love a 4bt or a turbo 6.5). How long will it take you to recoup costs, gas/diesel/mpg savings.

Time in between repair parts being longer for a diesel? Sure perhaps. My buddies 94 with a cummins had 450k, and the only big ticket things were things he wanted to do. However, with a brand new gasser, you shouldn't have any expenses except maintenance for 100k miles. That's a long time. Possibly a whole lot longer, and when you do, 350 valves, lifters.. blah blah etc. are cheap. You'll still be way ahead in $$.

Depends on what you want, you can get good power out of a gasser too. If you're used to used motors with XX?? miles on them and 25 years old, you'd be suprised what a new performance plus 350/290hp engine will feel like :D

''cheap as possible'' and diesel conversion don't go hand and hand

yea i got it, ive pretty much ruled out the cummins cause of cost and problems with getting parts. i really want a nice 4x4 thats good on gas with alot of parts availability. if i stick with gasoline i'm gonna get an s10 blazer or a jeep, i like my mopar too. the 00 grand cherokees are nice so thats a possibility. if i go diesel its gonna be a k5 for sure. i like my suvs im not much of a truck person. but the gasser k5 has got to go cause im only gonna get 2 stalls at the appt so i'm looking at either a cucv, jeep or blazer. id go foreign before i go ford.

my mom had a 92 cherokee l6 and it was bullet proof, any advice on 98 and up s10 blazers and grand cherokees?

Go with the CUCV blazer. Diesel. 308 gears=31"tires=16-18 mpg city, 26-28mpg hwy.

Ohh and a doubler for that extra low gear ratio:-)

Could roll with 33" tires with minor fender cutting, stock suspension.

There's a lot of guys that love the cucv blazers and intentionally keep their rid stock suspension. It all just depends on what you want out of it, trails you wanna take, etc...

26-28 mpg highway??? didnt know that was possible with the 6.2. all ive been reading was low 20s with the 6.2L, looks like thats the one. when i got this 86 i have now i could have got a cucv for about 800 more but i weht with the other cause i read so much bad stuff about the 6.2L:dunno:

26-28 is not impossible with a stock 6.2, but when you start putting bigger tires, lift, driving like you stole it, then you go down to low 20's.
I have a stash of 6.2 engines that are going in every vehicle I have, and I will have spare engines when one breaks, it's the cheapest way to have diesel.:thumb:
I do have one turbo diesel suburban left, I sold the other turbo's I had because I needed money.
I kept this one for my long trips, but all the other vehicles are for off road or local driving and N/A will be fine.

I heard the banks 6.2 turbo top boost is at a lower rpm, which would be ideal for off-road.

And the 6.5 turbo top boost is at higher Rpms, which would be good for long travels.

That's just what I heard...

boost from a simple turbo in a diesel is a function of engine load and fueling. They are not smart devices. they respond soley to load and fuel.

Doesn't make any sense to reference engine speed. these are not gas engines. and I'm not refering to variable geometry turbos in newer electronic diesels. their other function is to push egr for emissions.

are the 88 and newer ecm controlled diesels? i wanna avoid as much electronic stuff as possible. some of those 4bt look very simple, only a couple wires i seen on rebuilds. what year cucvs have the least electrical controlled engines but are still very dependable? i'm thinking 86 and earlier???

all CUCV's are not electronicaly controled, they only started that in 94 so no worries up to 93
