looking to add a selectable locker to my Dana 60. What one is best in general considering cost, quality, etc.??

IMO Ox lockers are the way to go. Mostly because theres nothing inside them selectable wise to go wrong other than the collar. ARBs have internal airlines, seals etc. If it fails you're unlocked end of story. If an ox fails you pull the cable off and screw in a lockout and keep it locked.

Plus you can run an OX on electric, air, or a cable. And they are beef as ****.

Just going to bump this because I like the title.

I need to pull my Spartan lunchbox locker out of my D60 front. It has been hit and miss but the recent 40s has it complaining a lot. (I think) With it out I’m contemplating a gear change but more over I’m looking at selectables. Yukon/ARB/whatever are all “assembled” in the US. :( I haven’t found an E-locker yet. I know nothing about the OX except for what Stomis said. I also see Yukon has a “normally locked” unit that requires air to unlock. For my truck and it’s use, that could work. Right now I have no OBA though. (Well, I need to swap my Nitrogen tank to an O2 tank. Could I use that?)

Ideas? 35 spline 4.88 might be going to 5.38s

I was just told in another thread to stay away from the 5.38. bunch of pinion problems have been showing up I guess.
Just a heads up.

Ox is personally the way I'm going here soon. I like the simplicity of it.

Eaton makes an E-Locker for a Dana 60.

If you already have 4.88's, I wouldn't go up to 5.13 or 5.38's. I think the cost would negate the benefit. I have 5.38's in my truck and really like it, but I think I would be just as happy with a 4.88

agreed , the percent of gear reduction between the two is so small its not worth the effort

I will vote for the e-locker
I have two right now and a third on the way.

OX locker is ok , but the cable version sucks, the electric version has the same type of issues as other Electric lockers , and the Air actuated ones do as well .
and you have to run the OX diff cover which is pretty big and may cause tierod clearance issues in a stock steer setup with a big tierod

the only real benefit is if your method of shifting fails you can put a bolt in them to lock it, which is nice

I haven't used an ARB, but the only way I find out that someone else has one is that they are telling me it doesn't work.

I’m going to vote the opposite. I’ve installed quite a few over the years, are never one complaint. Also running them on my rigs and they have been flawless. It all comes down to install quality.

I always ask what’s wrong with the Arb when they say that. I’ve had 3, the only ones that I’ve seen with issues were either installed wrong or beaten heinously

:dunno:

I’m sure all the ultra 4 guys wouldn’t run them if they sucked. Even if they were free!

So are you saying that the ARB that I got from you was treated nicely?
The sheetmetal on the truck and past pictures led me to believe otherwise.
:D

D60 ARB still working well here.

That shit was pristine, STFU

:haha:

ARB's are the most common locker failure I see on the trail. Usually an air supply issue (copper line or supply line) which leaves the locker open. If I ever ran one, it would have to be a comp model so when it loses air it's locked.

What's the deal with your Spartan locker?
I run a Lock Right in my 60 and it's been flawless.
I did have a Spartan in my old 10 bolt front with no issues but I changed axles about a year after I installed it.
I did notice that with the hubs locked and in two wheel on pavement that the Spartan was super ratchety sounding but I can't really detect the Lock Right.

I've been running the spartan for years and I've never heard it make any noise.

I have a Spartan Lunch box locker and 5:13 gears for my dana-60 that I have not installed yet. My truck currently runs 38" tires. Any more input on that Spartan would be interesting.

I don’t have evidence or fact that my Spartan has bitten the dust. I installed back in maybe 2011. Ran 38s for a while, dropped to 37s and did fine. It would ratchet when on concrete or slickrock, sometimes, normally just bucked. I have had it not lock both sides during short hill climbs but a quick reverse and wiggle would get it engaged. This last time out with 40s I had major issues. The horrible bangs and clunks it was making in Moab was frightening. Truck violently shaking bangs. I think it was the member in the first Gen blue K5 that looked under the rig while I was moving. Dunno who that was, might help describe it. Something about it looks to originate in the axle and shake the front driveshaft. Felt like really bad binding and violent release of the bind.

Smooth on forgiving surfaces and 2wd. Figured I’d open the diff and switch to a selectable. Sounds cool and if the Spartan ends up good I’ll sell it with the carrier. Also, I just had the T-case split and checked out. Seems to work fine. Once I fix my brake issue I’ll flex on some nearby K-rail and see if it complains. Maybe lock it up in the street and see what happens too.
