Best source for an OEM Tilt Column...???

JWPOORE said:
Just curious if you ever got your column from Brothers. I inquired at Brothers on 6/7/07 and they said they were backordered but were expecting their shipment of them in 10 days or less so I placed an order and needless to say, I'm still waiting for one of these to be in stock and ready to ship.

Keep dreaming..... I'm at 6 weeks now, and no sign of a delivery.

Brothers SUCKS!

Man, that really chaps my you know what. I could have bought a 70 van tilt in great looking condition off Ebay yesterday that happened to also be from my home town and hesitated too long because I was going to make sure this one was not being sent out, and then I would have ended up being stuck with two. Now I can only kick myself because it was only $159 with "buy it now". :doah:

51 Days and counting...... no tilt column. no phone call. no email notification.

Thanks BROTHERS!

Seems like it's time to call GMCPauls....

Yep, and if he had a delay, he'd keep you posted!
Does he carry them usually because I did not see them listed on his website? As far as Brothers; I used their online help service last week and asked if any were available or if they were expecting any, which they said they were expecting them in the next week or two. I asked how many were supposed to arrive and he told me they had 40 coming and he asked if I already had one on order. I told him that I did back on 6/7/07 and was told then that they were to arrive in less than 10 days back then. He said that my order should be fullfilled within the next 2 weeks when they arrive, (this was last week when he said it), so I'll wait and see, but I have my doubts.

Do you need to call GMC Pauls directly to see if he has them? I know that I have inquired at several other places and they are still waiting for their shipments as well.

No column yet  ?

Dumb question:
If it's for a '67-'72 model, does that means one can use the same model-years' steering wheel then :o ?

I want to use a '72 steering wheel on my '72 Blazer, but right now I have a mid '70's steering column.

I am no expert, but I think it will work. Here is some replica stock steering wheels for an example and they are the same for 67-72. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/0088.asp

Be careful of the reman. steering wheels from LMC. I bought one and maybe the originals were like this too, but the top of the wheel is really thin and "flexy". I could break it easily but pushing to hard on the top of the wheel. I wanted the stock interior style originally, but if I had to do it over, I'd get a more modern steering wheel.

Did you ever get your column? I don't want to jinx it yet, but it looks as though mine will finally arrive tomorrow. Hopefully it arrives in good condition with no problems.

I just picked one up off ebay fully rebuilt with the shifter tilt and turn signal handles for 300 bucks. They are on there all the time I think brothers is a little nuts for what they charge and you don't get the handles.

I checked my online CC statement and saw that Brothers finally charged my credit card (as of 8/2) for the steering column!!! That implies that the shipment has occurred, since it's illegal to charge in advance of the shipment......

If it weren't for that data point, I'd be completely in the dark about this order. I called a couple weeks ago and the guy on the phone said he'd "look into my backorder" and call me back by the end of the day with details. No call back (of course) but I've been too busy to call to cancel, and GMC Pauls doesn't carry factory tilt columns.

Anyway... the experience has been a huge disappointment from a delivery perspective, but I'll give it a fair assessment once it arrives and I get a chance to check the quality and install it.

I got mine today and like you, the only way I knew was because I was checking my credit card online and saw the deduction on 8/2. I then checked on Brother's website and saw the "item shipped" status but no tracking number so I used their online live support and had them send me the tracking number. I too had looked everywhere for one elsewhere with no luck and actually was the top bidder about 2 weeks ago on Ebay for one, but I guess their reserved price was beyond the $407 I offered and never heard from them again as far as purchasing it outright.

There were no others to be had for through Ebay until they charged my credit card for this one; then there have been 3 or 4 of them pop up for cheaper than this restored, but I am just tired of looking and it is finally here and done with.

So you HAVE a column from Brothers at this very moment......????

What's the verdict, does it look right or like a poorly done reproduction part? Does the black color look like a factory column black, or something else?

I couldn't tell you what the factory black would look like because the one in my Blazer is painted, but this black does look good and was done very nice and professional looking. I must say, it looks brand new, which for the most part it is with all the new wiring, seals, etc. The paint is a satin black and it does look good in my opinion. It better for these prices! :D

Mine by the way came with a shifter handle even though I ordered a new one for it. It must have came off this column originally because it needs to polished a little, but it is in pretty good condition. Also came with 2 new tilt levers - not sure why there were 2, but each one has a different looking knob ending.

UPDATE:

Well yesterday I finally got around to opening up the steering column box from Brothers to install it in my 'Burb.

A couple of observations:

The black color is more of a chalky black than a glossy black. This is probably due to it being painted as opposed to powdercoated or baked-on like the factory did.

The gear selector is WAY shorter with a much more pronounced bend in it than the factory selector. The old selector stuck out past the steering wheel (which is HUGE also). The new one is substantially behind the wheel now.

The turn signal lever gets reused from the old column, but the molded plastic on the turn signal cancelling part is a slightly different shape than stock so the flat part of the mount doesn't drop into place without doing some filing first.

The gear indicator window numbering is large and blocky looking, it is not in the same font as the original factory item. This should be as simple as swapping the original one in if that bothers you.

The turn signal itself seems pretty stiff when selecting a left or right turn. This might be something that loosens up over time

Other than that, I was happy to discover that it DOES solve my weird electrical problems I was having where the both lights would blink on left turn signals, only the right would blink on right turns and when I pressed the brake NOTHING would blink.

Overall, it's a good part..... not a true OEM-quality replacement due to the items noted above, but certainly a very serviceable item.

Sounds like it has a van shift lever on it, preferable IMO.

I put em on all my trucks.
