best tire carrier design I've seen yet

Somebody used to sell one similar to that. I question the rigidity of it with bigger tires, but with 33's or so it should be fine. I think that thing cost like $450 or something like that which made full custom bumpers right in reach.
 
Wasn't there a thread on pirate about people having those crack and break off because of the weight/lever arm/flexing issue. Was that just because of oversized tires or the design or the materials used?
 
There are threads all over about that. In fact, I had a trailer spindle crack and dump my whole tire and carrier onto the road. The tire has to be light enough and the whole thing braced well enough that the assembly isn't bouncing while you drive.

It's important with this design for a second reason. The carrier sits so close to the tailgate that any movement would be messing up the tailgate.

Its all in design. Plus a lot of fab suppliers selling trailer spindle kits stepped up their size too.

My tire carrier has one of kurts spindles, but I made sure that when it closed the thing had feet that landed on delrin pads so it couldnt bounce and jar while driving. Im still yet to safety wire it a year later though :doah:

We've switched our design to a swing down. Far better method IMHO.

Yeah it depends on what you're building I guess. My trucks got 33s on it so its not like its a 40in spare. Personally I wouldnt want a swing down on an everyday truck where Im in the back alot.
 
Something to think about is the effort of lifting a tire onto the swing-out. It can seriously get to more than a guy can do, especially if the rig is in some precarious location. The swing-down gives you a built in lever and makes it much safer. Obviously the swing-away is easier for day-to-day tailgate access.
