Best way to drop NP205 and/or SM465?

All,
I am getting ready to pull my 205 to do shiftrails and gaskets, etc, as well as my SM465 for seals and clutch, etc, and I am thinking I might just buy a transmission jack. I have read up on the "strap" removal technique (remove tunnel, get 2x4's, use ratchet straps etc) and I am thinking it is easier to just get a transmission jack.

I was thinking about this one:

Thoughts? I could also do the saddle adapter thing on top of a floor jack, but I am thinking that on a lifted truck, a dedicated tranny jack is a better idea.

Are you using a vehicle lift like in a shop? That trans jack will be about 3.5'~4' tall.

I don't have a lift, but I can put the truck up in the air if needed. I have a forklift, and can lift the whole truck and put the axles (or frame, or whatever) on jackstands to gain extra height.

The truck has 40's and a 4 inch lift already, so it is fairly easy to crawl around under it anyway.

Imo, it'd have to be too high for jack stands to be safe. Remember, not only does it have to be high enough for the jack itself but also high enough to get the trans assembly out from under it.

I'd suggest going the motor hoist through the floor route. :wink1:

I've used a regular transmission jack to lift an NV4500/208 assembly. Strap it down to the jack for safety.

Cherry picker through the door with chain through the floor. Easy to do and take both out at the same time.:D

I haven't tried the lifting it up thru the tunnel before. Looks interesting.

Recently we pulled a tranny out of a camaro and the tranny jacks at the tool rental place were broken and nobody in town had one. We bought an ATV jack and it worked great.

I would rather have the rig low vs high for safety anyway.

The hoist throught the door is by far the easiest. I dropped one the other day in about 20 minutes

I have the transmission jack adapter from Harbor Freight. It's basically the top part of the jack in your link - it fits into a standard floor jack. I've used it to pull my 208 and 700 with 4-5" of lift and 35" tires. The tranny just barely fit underneath the rockers on that floor jack.

I think the best tool is a real tranny jack because they get really low and also have a pretty good reach to grab gear boxes out of lifted trucks.

The one you are linking to is really only for use with a vehicle hoist, IMO.

I just did a clutch in mine a few days ago and the 465/205 is a heavy mofo. Me and two of my buddies did it by using ratchet straps because i didnt feel like diggin out my engine hoist and takin off the tunnel. Just drain the fluid out of both before you drop them. Dropping them is easy, putting them in is what i do NOT look forward to doin again. IMO

dagnabbit, i just slid underneath on my back, unbolted 'em one piece at a time and lifted them down :doah:Same thing when I pulled my NV4500. Heck, fingers are meant to be squashed :haha:

This way gets interesting, I almost dropped a 400/241 on my head not so chill but you have to learn somehow. Its amazing what the right tools can do to job times

Sorry to hijack, but im just trying to swap in a new bell housing, using the cherry picker though the tunnel, do you just take both the tranny/tcase at the same time? Where do you put the chains or strap, does it balance?

I kind of made a chain sling, to hold the tranny and t-case. Once you get in there you'll see how things go. I tried to balance everything at the adapter at first, it didn't work so well. Oh, I too, used a cherry picker through the floor.
