I hear that....that's why I pick mine up in your neck of the woods. Good luck finding a clean anything up this way. My personal favorite years are 1967-1972, 1973-1979, and the 1990-1991. I wouldn't touch anything early to mid 80's.
 
One more consideration, my '91 has rear wheel ABS - I don't know the first year for it (prolly '90 with the electric speedo), but my '89 didn't have it. It is easy enough to bypass if you don't want it, but you if you want rear wheel ABS look for a '90-'91.
 
90 started the seatbelts on the roof and the rear ABS.

I have had a '91, '88 and have a '90. Go with the TBI, saves some headache later.:wink1:
 
I have to put my thoughts in.

I like the look of the 1979/1980 body and this is my favorite color scheme.

I like the TBI because it is still easy to work on and not a whole lot of electronic crap to deal with. The 1987 seems to be a pretty sought after one on eBay and it has the 305 cid for a little better fuel efficiency.
 
I don't see a 305 as anything but a detriment.

Speaking of late 70's, the 400 would be a good engine to look for. I think it was available in 1975-1981, but I think I've only seen them in 78 and 79's.
 
I had an 89 that had rear wheel anti-lock. AND a removable top. AND working A/C. I'd agree with 87-91, the TBI is nice and it had the upgraded tranny. Don't bother with the 305, unless seriously upgraded, its just not enough engine for these heavy 4x4's.

Agreed if you are going to spend any time off road or mudding. It was rough on my trip to Colorado and on steep trails. It did ok in Mohab where I went.

My truck was setup for North Dakota Highway Patrol so it was a road vehicle. MPG was the goal and I was happy on that.

If I was doing any serious off roading I would want different gears.
