They bleed ok. They stop the bike and that's the main deal.
It had Hayes nine brakes when I got it.
@Abusfullofnuns brycen got to find out yesterday that he isn't as fast as Dad. Riding in the backyard and gravel roads is different than the trails

So my son and daughter both are getting bit by the bug. My daughter is 6 and is wanting to ride with her brother. Looks like I've got a few expenses coming my way. She is currently riding a 16" Hotrock.
For all you guys with kids. Do you have bike suggestions? I'm thinking I want to keep the cost below the $500 mark. I figure that should get her a pretty solid 20" or XS24"

Google search youth mountain bike comparison. There are a few good articles floating around that cover the price range from affordable to ridiculous.
I used a trek precaliber for both of my kids and it worked OK. Most frustrating part was the 3x drive train that they came with. The low buck derailleur combined with too many shift options just caused too big a learning curve for them with shifting. Looks like the new ones are 1x drive trains though which would be a much better option

Yep, 1x for sure.
My shredder started on an Early Rider Trail 3S 20” with air fork, cable disc, and 3 speed belt drive. My youngest is still riding it.
My oldest is now riding a Specialized Camber FSR Grom. Still not as light as I’d like. Wheels, fork, and drivetrain upgrade is in her future. She’s earned it and rarely complains on big days.
My recommendation is to look for something light. If their bike is heavier than yours, they’re not going to have fun putting in miles. My youngest will continue to inherit hand me downs due to her lack of interest and effort. The 9yo will continue to have a nicer bike than her first car as long as she keeps up the effort. If we didn’t own the ones we have now, Trailcraft would be high on the list.

I gave Brycen enough area for about 4 short features. I told him that he would have to work hard to show his mom and I that he wants to ride. Not just showing up to the trailhead with me or going on a bike path with his family. If he wants us to spend the time and money to pursue this sport he is going to earn it.
I rototilled the dirt in and out of the seasonal creek. Gave him some pointers on making transitions by hand. We'll see if he has the dedication to stay off the muddy stuff while he builds and let's it dry out.

Crash and burn . Kiddo tried to hit a jump and went OTB. Guess he gets that new helmet he was asking for...
Anyone else here get poison oak? I get it like crazy, feels like from just riding near it. Hate the stuff!
I hate Poision Oak, I get it several times a year. Tecnu works ok.

Poison oak out here, no ivy or sumack I think. Tecnu is awesome @bmxbryant9. If you see a normal doc maybe they can prescribe you Prednisone.
Lots of poison oak in Northern ca. I've never had issues but my dad would get it if he looked at it. Always kept tecnu and prednisone at home and in our toy hauler. We used to race dirt bikes at Hollister hills a few times a year, he would get it every time he raced there.
Yeah we have it here but I don't seem to have a problem with it.
I finished replacing the cables on my gravel bike... LONG overdue.. Was so worth it. Don't ignore your cables.
I do miss MTB in AK.
