Anyone running a 454 in their blazer rigs and if so what do you think of it vs. a 350?

Well I don't have one in my blazer, but I've got a trail rig with 350/465/203/205, and a tow rig with a 454/465/205. I may have inadvertantly wheeled the crew cab...once or twice...or a few times. Let me tell you, if I had an extra 454 laying around I would put it in my trail rig in an instant. I love that motor, especially with a stick. You can run it from 500rpm to 4000 rpm, and have power all the way through. It makes for a lot less shifting. I can bog it way down, and it just pulls hard. Seems like it will climb over most things nearly at idle. Love it! :D

there is no replacement for displacement! :D

comparing a 350 to a 454 is no comparison. i have run both & would pic the 454 any day of the week.

I have a Burb that I yanked a good 350 out of to put in a 454. Mucho better. The 454 will make the burb jump from a dead stop. It was stock for stock 80k mile 350, rebuilt 454 and a major power difference.

I've had two vehicles that I switched from SBC to BBC. First was an 84 3/4 ton 4wd, 6" lift and 35s 4.10s. Had a pretty healthy 408, and when I swapped the 454 in, mostly stock, mild cam and headers, switched from 4.10s to 3.73s, and would roast the 35s off.

2nd vehicle was my 78 Malibu. Putting a BBC in a light car like that will make if fly anyways, but I had Bowtie alum heads, 284 Comp Cams, headers, the works. Nite and day difference is an understatement.

Like the saying goes, there is no replacment for displacement. My 89 has a 454, 40" boggers and still has 3.73s in it, and it goes no problem. Swapping to 4.56s so I don't toast the tranny.

I never owned a 383, but couple 400s. They ran good, but IMO they can't beat a 454, only in gas mileage. If your looking to keep it light, then maybe a SBC, but just can't beat the power of a BBC.

well, most 383's are built due to the machine work that has to be done to acheive the displacement......soooooo if you were to build 454 with similar specs to a 383.....then you will have the same conclusions......maybe a lil more price, but alot more power.....

454, yes please
468, yes please!!

Another vote for the big block.

But, I would like to add....the consistency of a big block vs. a small block.

Big blocks seem to be less phased by what it's powering, meaning that a slight incline will be less noticeable with a big block, where you might feel it with a small block. I have a 454 in my K30 crew service truck and jump around between 7,500lbs to 8,700lbs depending on how much diesel I have in my transfer tank. The 454 hardly even lets me know of a 1,200lbs weight difference.....but if I had a 350, it would definantly grunt a little with the added weight.

Another thing that is consistant with a big block is fuel mileage, my mileage really doesn't vary that much really, even pulling a small trailer. I only get 8-10mpg with my K30, but at least I know that I'll be hard pressed to do much worse. Heck, even my Dodge diesel varies more than that on fuel vs load...

Go Big Block-its in and its runnin-

I pulled the 307 out of my 69 K20 and put a 454 in it's place - it is very impressive. Something about rolling in 2nd gear and punching it and hearing those tire bark just works for me. And honestly, it doesn't appear to drink much more gas than the 307 drank.

What about a 454 vs. a 383? Last big block I had was 427 like 19 years ago.

my friend just swapped in an HT383 gm performance crate engine in his 72 blazer. this engine has a ton of power for a small package. however, i think of it as a hotrodding motor with a little added bottom end you know what i mean? he would kill me in a drag race but doesn't have nearly the power mine has. i have a 454 with about 40,000 since rebuild with rva cam and amul intake and it low end blows the 383 out of the water. you also may thinks the 383 can tow good but i can hear it struggle when towing about a 10ft (pretty heavy) BBQ. my truck experiences no change in power when theres about 1000lbs in the bed.
