Big block guys

Yea, I'm still keeping the blazer. It'll just keep the TPI 350 in it. Been trying to finish up the doubler stuff for it, but stuff pops up. Now this Chevelle appeared... haha

Because everyone likes pictures.

It needs new floor pans and the bottom of the passenger rear quarter panel replaced. It'll all eventually get done, but my plans are do the floor pans and interior. Swap it from a floor shifter back to a three on the tree (for now), and drive it. While driving it I'm going to finish the big block, find a T56 6 speed, and cobble it all together. Then drop it in and start doing body work. I'll also go over the front and rear suspension and convert it from 4 wheel drums to at least discs up front.

I think someone already tried to lower the rear, it has kind of a lean to it.

Another thing, this won't be going in the blazer anymore... I just picked up a 67 chevelle and it'll find its way into that. The down side to the chevelle is that it's a 4 door, but I like the 4 doors, so no big deal to me.

Well the important thing is that your keeping the big block. Wow, 4dr Chevelle BBC....going to be a nice sleeper?
I've got a 1970 4 door Impala with one of my spare 454's going into it. Going to keep it all stock looking.

The plan is to keep it sleeperish, not a full on sleeper though.

Just an update on this thing. The heads are at the machine shop. When I talked to the guys over there they said the best thing to do would be to just do a basic valve job and then set them up with the new springs and seals. They said if I were to do anything else like put big valves in them, I may as well just get aluminum heads b/c they'd end up only being a little more in price.

If there gonna charge you as much as it costs to get a set of new aluminum heads just to cut seats & install new valves.....time for a new shop!!!!

I like the '66's better,but a '67 is a close second...!

I am not one of those guys that say "If only it was a 2 door"...

In fact I feel bad for all the 4 door cars in minty shape, that got cannibalized to "restore" a 2 door, usually one so rotted it wasn't worth doing..

I have seen and ridden in some very nice BBC powered full sized Chevy's that were 4 doors, and they not only went right along, your family and friends could ride along, and get in without having to smash your face into the steering wheel to get in the back seat..

My older brother bought a nice '67 Chevelle 4 door from NC,it was rust free, and had a 230 straight 6 with a 3 on the tree..he drove it a few years and ended up selling it for 3500 bucks if I remember right..

After he did he said he should have kept it,and put the 1970 454 he had sitting in his garage in it and made it a sleeper..the car so so original he was reluctant to modify it..like they say--it's only original once..

I would keep the floor shifter for the 3 speed, the "on the tree" shifters are noted for jamming up often as they age and things wear..usually when you go to shift into second from first...

Right now the car has a 250 straight 6. I'll run that until I've accumulated all the parts to swap in the big block and t56.
The reason I want to put it back to a column shift is because right now it's got a cheap mr gasket conversion in it. When driving it I have to hunt around and play with the shifter to get it back in first gear. There's also no distinct neutral. I have everything but the shifter for the column (already ordered one) to put it back to a column shift. I guess there are also bushings that go on the shift rods at the trans linkage that I'm going to have to source. I'll try to make it work until th t56 goes in. If I can't, I'll put the floor shifter back in until then, but try to figure out why it has those issues.

I'm not sure but a floor shifter for a 4 speed Saginaw or Muncie tranny would probably work on a 3 speed too...

I had a "Spark-O-Matic" floor shifter in one vehicle that was a real piece of...work...Mr.Gasket probably bought them out!..

I believe you can source parts like those bushings from Year One or the Chevelle parts houses similar to LMC...today you can practically buy every part for a 60's Chevelle or Camaro, years ago you had to go searching at swap meets for OEM parts...

This 454 may be a guinea pig for a set of those cheap chinese aluminum heads on ebay... The machine shop said that these things are wore out, needs new valves and valve guides. I don't know if they don't want to do the work or what, but I'm waiting on them to quote me a price. If it's close to what an unassembled set of heads is (since I have everything but the valves) I'll probably just go that route.

What casting are they?

Martin

The iron heads are 781 heads. The machine shop quoted me $750 to sleeve the guides (said they sleeve them because a few of the valve guides run through water jackets), cut for the spring pocket, cut for the valve seal, buy the new valves, install everything and setup the proper valve height, and the cleaning magnaflux and inspection (which I have to pay for anyway...)

So, this just happened... I'm bringing them to the machine Monday to get checked out and setup.

Yep, eBay heads. Before I bought them I asked the seller what brand they are and where they came from. He said they're unbranded and straight from china.
Since I'm putting all my own components in them, the only thing I'm curious about is if the combustion chamber is the 115cc's like advertised or not.
