Big block guys

I wouldn't worry about balancing if we are talking a 5500 rpm engine.

Plus a .1 of a gram is probably tighter than most machine shops can do.

Well, tighter than most of them will bother anyways

I just weighed everyone one of the new pistons with their wrist pins and they weigh 31.4 oz. I also cleaned up one of the old pistons that I already removed the rings from and weighed it with its wrist pin, it weighed 31.5 oz.

Yep that's close enough, if it was more like +5-10 grams then yes

Ok, another question. My cam will be here today, so I started digging around in the pile of parts that I pulled from the engine and I can't find a cam retainer anywhere. After a quick Google search, most 454's didn't come with a retainer plate, unless it was a roller cam engine?

Before I put the timing set on, do I need to get a retainer plate?

Alright, short block is put together. I was thinking about this the other day, I have an ORD sbc crossmember with diy4x engine mounts. Will the big block oil pan clear the small block crossmember?
Also, do I need to get a water pump from a 90's model 454? I'll be running the kwik performance serp adapters. I know I need the long style water pump, just not sure of the year swap. And one last thing, for now, would there be any advantage to running a starter off a 90's model 454, since its smaller?

Well I don't know what year for the water pump.
But I am a fan of gear reduction starters. More cranking power for the same or less amperage draw.

Yeah, get a reverse water pump for a 90's motor. All the rest of my accessories are for a 91 k5 with a 350. You didn't mention it but there's a specific crank pulley you need for that set up. Do you have the serpentine brackets yet?

Not sure what a factory type starter will cost but you can get a mini starter cheap off of eBay, mine was $80.

I'm going to use the same TPI brackets and accessories I'm running right now. Kwik performance sells an adapter to use the small block crank pulley I'll end up getting.

The reason I asked about the water pump and starter is b/c this weekend I get 30% off at my part time job. I figure I may as well take advantage of it.

Also, if you're running a mechanical fan, a 99 C3500 w/ 454 has a reverse rotation 9 blade fan. I haven't found any severe duty fan clutches for a serpentine application but I'm still looking.

I'm running an electric fan. I actually need to upgrade to dual fans and install the BMW switch I've got, just don't have the right connector for it.

Another question, since the heads are up next to get worked on. Do I need to get new valves for these, or just re-use the old ones? They're the 781's that I got from you @nvrenuf

Wire wheel the old ones valves and inspect, they might need to be touched up. But if your gonna buy new valves might as well step up to the 2.19/1.88 valves.

You can't really beat the price that Competition Products sells there head improver kit for...

I wonder if they sell just the valves? I plan on running the recommended comp cams springs and seals.

This is were I'm at now. Don't pay any attention to the crap on my shelves or my toolbox.

I have a new water pump, starter, flex plate, and oil filter adapter also, just not installed. Need to get a balancer, the head work done, intake, distributor, and figure out what fuel injection to go with.

Any comments or thoughts?

Make sure your timing pointer is set up to read true tdc!
