Big Block Motor Mounts? The difference between two wheel drive and four wheel drive!

Just noticed this post now -- Yes, you sent the engine mount spacers and torque rods with the turbo 400.

I knew I never tossed them out. Could have saved a couple hours looking if I would have remembered that they went with the trans! :doah:

I totally remember saying " you may as well take these supports...I`ll never use them. " :haha:
 
Good info to have. I have forever run a BBC but was never sure if motor mount heights were different. I heard yes and no from different sources, but nothing ever really verified. Your tape measure has confirmed what is true.

Especially good info me right now, as I have a spare 454 going into a 1988 Caprice cop car this summer, and now I know the scoop regarding motor mount heights. Thanks for the pics!
 
It is not only the big blocks,but ALL the V8's in square body 4x4's that have the "taller" clamshells...they fit both small and big blocks,so you can use ones off a small block on the big block..

I am going to edit the title. Now that I know what I got. :thumb:

The taller Clamshells I used are off my old small block that was in my 4x4.

What happened is when I was painting the 454 I grabbed a set of mounts that I had from a 76 3+3 two wheel drive truck with a 350 that I had parted out.
Not knowing that 4x4 and 2x4 clam shells were different, I thought I would just paint them and all would be good.

Not so much! :haha:
Altogether it only took a couple hours the swap the taller ones in, that included cleaning painting and grinding the drivers side mounts corner down about 3/4 of an inch to fit around the headers.

Went from sitting on the cross member to this! :woot:
And that is with no shims and still the old rubber inserts in the motor mounts!







I can easily stick my finger between the pan and the cross member now!
 
I also think "car" clamshells are even a bit "shorter" than 2wd truck ones,and the 4x4 ones are the "longest"....so there is probably 3 different styles..car,2wd truck,and 4x4 truck..

I went thru hell trying to find some clamshells to get the 307 V8 in my '81 G-10 van ,and now I don't even remember just which ones I did end up using,I think they were car ones off the '73 Malibu I got the engine from...I had a pile of them leftover from various engine swaps and off junkers I scrapped..think I tried them all,till I figured out why the RH side just wouldn't line up..

I spent a whole sunday pulling the engine in and out about 5 times,before I had 2 clamshells that lined up with the frame pads,and could bolt the engine in it--I had to make an adapter plate for the frame pad on the passenger side,it had a straight six originally,and I guess the RH pad is mounted in a different spot than a V8,but the LH mount lined up perfectly..there was no "extra" holes in the crossmember,evidently the pedestal the pad bolts too is different on a V8 and that in turn bolts to the crossmember..
GM no longer sold them either..

I tried finding a V8 frame pad ,but only one junkyard had an '85 G-10 with the engine block still in it,and it was lying right on the ground with no rims or tires..spent 3 hours trying to get it off after jacking it up,but ended up giving up...later I found out it wouldn't have fit my van anyway!..:doah:.after '82 they changed quite a few things on the front suspension on the vans..including engine mount pedestals..
 
So a car buddy of mine says these rigid style mounts can over-stress a block and crack the block, or cause stress issues. Anyone ever heard of this or experience that? This is the first I've heard of this so thought I'd ask.
 
Factory engine mounts are rubber encased,the rubber part mounts to the crossmember..the "clamshells" are just brackets that bolt to the engine ..

I have seen solid steel engine mounts,mostly sold for use on drag strip cars,I wouldn't want to use those on anything street or off road driven--I drove a '69 Camaro that had them,and it vibrated like crazy,and I could see where they could break things like the engine block or chassis with no rubber or "give" to them at all...I could see a 4x4 with those flexing over obstacles and transfering the stress to the engine block,which wouldn't be good..
 
Do you think this would apply to the DIY4x4 and ORD mounts as well?
I can see how completely solid mounts would be a no-no, but there should be some give/flex to the two mounts mentioned above, eh?

I believe solid mounts serve their purpose with a motor that has been balanced so the vibrations are kept to a minimum. Otherwise a non-balanced engine will do just that with the vibrating and causing stress, etc.
 
I'm not really familiar with those mounts,so someone who has used them would have to answer that question...
