Big Block Options

You could also look into using a 502 block and throwing a 4.25" crank and having a 540. Find a good set of heads and you are off to making loads of HP/Torque.

I knew I had this data somewhere..... just had to dig it up!

Several years ago a buddy of mine built a "relatively" low buck 454 for his Blazer... In fact he used to be on here (Ck5). Anyway, his focus was to build TORQUE...! ... and boy did he ever. This is data from a chassis dyno run right after getting it broke in.

Worth looking at is that he had max torque @ 1800 rpm- just under 400 @ the rear tires. 1800...!! Granted, it fell flat on it's face > 4000 rpm - but it was a monster off idle.

This motor had the following features: 9:1 CR, iron heads, Holley 2 Bbl FI, Performer manifold, stock cam (although advanced 4*), headers and duals.... This is a great example of Torque on a budget. :D

Wouldn't a factory 8.1 liter truck be the way to go?

You'd have to talk with folks about how easy they are to modify in the engine management system, but if it's something that can be done fairly easily, and you are talking about buying a wrecked vehicle, I see that as being the only way to go big CI and injected for a reasonable price.

No idea what kind of numbers they put down, but the numbers you are talking about would likely require bigger injectors on the 8.1L at a bare minimum, assuming it's nowhere close to your goal in stock form.

This engine will be for my 4x4. It is a project to create a vehicle that excels in all types of off-roading. I need it to have fuel injection for rock-crawling, and huge hp/tq #'s for mud and high speed. I am willing to pay for a fuel injection system that will provide that for me. My current 355 puts out approx. 300hp and 400lb/ft and I know I will need more once i get the 42's on. A stroker would be great for the kind of torque I am looking for. Just a big # stroker :D

In case you want to look at "off-the-shelf" crate options, I created this comparison chart a while ago. It's the factory dyno sheets but normalized to a single y-axis scale so you can more easily compare them (GM is famous for using different scale units on EVERY engine!! It makes it almost impossible to compare apples to apples)

Anyway, most of these are carbureted motors but I'll bet money on the fact that FI won't change the power much (if at all). FI will improve crispness, economy and let you run upside down....but I've never seen dramatic power gains simply due to FI swaps. Look at the RamJet502 (above) it's not all that different from the ZZ502. :deal:

Greg,

These are good #'s to digest.... Interesting how Torque is peaking in the range of 2750 - 4000 on those motors. Great rpm range to give a lotta torque and still generate some big power #'s....

By comparo, the 454 data that I posted was peak @ 1800 (just where your graph begins) - and based on a 15% driveline loss and corrected to std conditions... it made 497 ft-lbs of flywheel torque at this point. hmmmm.... One could argue that this would be more suited for wheelin'.... Then again, nothing like feeling the big power up in the rrrrrr's. :D

Burt,

That reminds me of my first Marv story (is this the Lounge?)....also at BB'02:

I'm the last guy coming up a steep rock ledge near the end of the run and everyone else is standing around waiting for the "last guy" to get up the obstacle.... My truck climbs, the front end gets light, and the front springs extend...allowing my front driveshaft to pull apart at the splines.

So I'm parked at the top of this rock (having never done a "trail repair" before) and this dude comes diving under my truck next to me.

"Hey, let's take a look at this oh this isn't bad the splines look fine all you need to do is unbolt the straps from the yoke and slide these two back together..."

Then this guy looks over at me, and after a long silence offers me a handshake and says:

"Oh, I'm Marv by the way....." :)

That just cracked me up. I had no idea who this guy was, but he was right there under the truck helping me out...and it took him a while to even realize I had NO idea who he even was.

Good times, good times.
