Pulled off the pan of my 454 that is suppose to be 4 bolt mains. Well there seems to be 4 bolt caps but only two bolts in them one on each side of the connecting rod. This motor had 67,000 on the clock and supposibly never been opened. Did they forget some bolts at the factory ? Is this typical ? Or has someone been in the motor and forgot them :dunno:

I'm wondering if it's even feasible to put 4 bolt caps on a 2 bolt block...

Well the numbers on the block is 14015445, which the book says 4 bolt mains. So the caps have 4 bolt holes but only two bolts in them.

I know you can actually turn a two bolt main block into a four bolt main, you just need to find some four bolt main caps to do it, have the holes bored and taped.

you would have to guess the bolts are just missing then.. odd..

splayed FTW...... ;)

Not without machine work , as the caps sit into a recess that is machined into the block

If that is the block # your bolts are missing for sure

A lil more to it than just finding the caps & tappin sum holes ,machine work is required, block must have the recess machined into it for the caps to be properly seated, then the holes for the caps will be drilled & tapped , then the block will need to be line bored

Sorry for the HUGE picture but wanted to show the recess that the main caps fit into

You sir are the winner , odd yes , but good ole Billybob who rebuilt that there motor musta needed them thare bolts for sumthin else

I pulled an oil pan off once and found extra rod nuts. Even had a checker reman 4.3 chevy missing 3 head bolts. Found doing VCgaskets.

guess It was the new guys 1st day putting caps on..

It's been awhile since i've had a BBC apart but IIRC the block registers for the caps are the same on a 2 bolt and 4 bolt block unlike a SBC where they are different. With that being said you need to check to see if the block is indeed drilled for the outside bolts and if it is then someone has been into that engine and forgot to install the outer bolts.

Crazy! :eek1:

Fwiw, my current 454 project is using a 14015445 block and it is 4 bolt main.

Oh, btw, you can't do the splayed main bolts on a big block as the outers would get into oiling veins.

I just looked up in the holes in the caps, and the block has not been drilled or tapped for the outside bolts.

So since the block has not been drilled or tapped. I will leave it alone, clean up the oil pan and re-install. Kinda weird that the motor numbers says its a 4 bolt mains, has the 4 bolt caps, but block was never drilled or tapped for this.
Not going to worry about it. Going to button it up and move to the next weird azz thing that will happen to me.

Could be worse. Could be just the outside holes that have the bolts........
