BIG BLOCKvs LSvs DURAMAX

This is good aplace as any to ask opinions-what is better for a four wheel drive application-Big Block / LS/or Duramax diesel?Can a big block with huge displacement beat a duramax diesel ?Can an lsx with the latest advancements in oiling ,port design ect.,be built to beat both ? . All of these engines are awesome, and the diesel will take the win on low end torque,fuel consumption ,ect.If you guys could, back up your opinions with why you think one will outdo the other.OFcourse the more money you put into an engine will play a big part, so if at all possible( ?) lets try and keep it fair(?)Have any of you heard of a mega inch big block producing more torque than a mega modified twin turbo diesel?
 
I think you need to define the purpose of the truck first

OK,lets say for the sake of argument that we are building the truck to perform in a variety of offroad conditions,think ultimate adventure, where all conditions are usually present in one of there trips(mud /rocks/sand/hills ,and the budget for said engines is $10,000.00. AND on the flip side of that your living in fantasy land , Sonny Leonard is your neighbor , and he will build you a big block chevy that will be a diesel killer. IS THIS POSSABLE - to even think that a gas motor can be built to outperform a diesel? I ask this because I have never heard of it happening. (I hope)You guys will have to cut me some slack, for asking such questions.
 
I geuss I SHOULD have said balls to the wall modified big block vs balls to the wall diesel, with as much as fair between the two engines as possible(intercooled twin turboes,ect)
 
It's not even a question. You can not build a big block that can out perform a hot duramax. For one, no one would want or need a monster big block with a radical cam and blower for 4 wheeling "adventures" type scenarios. Regardless, a 1000HP big block is a snarling, rough idling, gets hot quick, radical, race gas sucking animal. A 1000HP Duramax is pretty smokey on the low end, but set up with the right turbo combo can be daily driven and get 15mpg in a 7,500lb truck.

Your assuming the big block would be na. You can turbo gas engine and have streetable power too....

I have no clue where you are going with this. There is no 1000ci gas engine that I am aware of. Even if there was it would weigh too much, be too big, and get literally 1 mile to 1 gallon.

A Duramax is like a 403ci engine, iirc.

Yeah there is no way you could build a monster displacement engine that runs on pump gas that has small efficient ports and runs a cam that takes advantage of twin turbo cylinder filling.I should ve known better.
 
Like the other engine question its a loaded question.

In an all around good to go do everything ultra reliable off road rig. It's either LS or duramax.

For me its an LS. If I were building a do everything rig I would be making it as light as possible. Even a mild cammed LS with decent heads will be more power than you need.

The diesel gets the nod in my mind for serious long term expo though.
 
I sorta get the gist of what kind of discussion you're trying to start. I think the problem is the parameters you initially set are so huge that we could all spend weeks chasing our tails, and solve nothing. With the parameters as they are the only answer is "Yes" to all three.

So, my suggestion is this: More narrowly define end use, budget, and which aspects are the biggest priority. Cost to swap/install? Fuel economy? Cheapest/easiest horsepower? Best towing? weight? Coolest looking?

The simple answer, ain't never simple, and the answer is different for most everyone.
