Big RPM drop when going from Park to Drive

Ok, since manifold vacuum seems to be the way to go, I hooked up to manifold vacuum, dropped the park rpm to 750, retuned the carb (it was a bit too lean) and after a few iterations of idle speed and mixture settings I am basically where I was with ported vacuum. Park idle around 750, drive idle around 500. Good throttle response and acelleration but nothing better than when I had it at ported vacuum. The idle does seem to be a tad bit smoother and more consistent though and since everyone says mani vacuum, I'll go ahead and leave it there.

I must say, I love all the knowledge this forum brings out.
