Black Betty - Formerly Blaze the Monster Machine

1984 K5 Project for Dad and kids
Well shit. Apparently it’s not that you have red plastic over the brake light, it has to be a sealed lens with gasket. So I gotta buy a tail light before I get it inspected. Oh well. Still a blast to drive.

That’s annoying

Ya it was but oh well. I’ll have the light installed this weekend and will try again on Monday. Got a few things to tinker with it on Sunday anyways.

What’s more annoying is I think I threw away all the hardware and bushings I bought to redo the radiator mounts and fan shroud.

Not much but some little things. New tail light and new air filter.

The PSC pump must be machined slightly differently than the factory pumps. Not only did I have to space it out about a 1/4” to make it clear the engine, but even with the adjustments maxed out I couldn’t get the belt tight enough and it would squeal whenever turning at a stop. Issues I didn’t have with the stocker or reman. Decided to buy new belts today because who knows what’s on here. I take the old ones to o’reilly’s and we start looking and sure enough they are the right belts so I’m guessing they were just stretched out. I get the new belts and had to use a pry bar to slip it over the pulley they were so much smaller. Once on the pulley they had some slack but only about a 1/2” which was perfect. Got them tightened up and no more squealing. Also got more clearance around the frame for the hoses which was a nice benefit and the reservoir is sitting straight up and down now also.

The truck came with a 454 radiator in it and pieces of the factory fan shroud zip tied every where. Trashed that a long time ago and ordered a new 1 piece fan shroud for a 454. Made some brackets to drop it an inch to account for the body lift and get the fan centered in it. Still had to do some trimming on the bottom to make it fit. It’s not finished as I’ve gotta patch up the gaps around the sides and top but it’s better than nothing. It looks like I’ll need about a 1/2” spacer to get the fan deeper in but I’ll confirm that once the shroud is permanently mounted. I also bought new radiator mounting parts since I threw the ones I previously bought away in the trash this week.

Decided to go after my transmission leak today. If I drive it constantly it only has one or two drops but if sits for a week it creates a huge pool under it.

Figured it was probably the detent cable and dipstick tube.
Dropped the pan for the third time in a 100 miles and was greeted with some nasty fluid again. It’s only a matter of time before it dies.

Good thing is I think I found the leak. Dipstick seal was trashed. Of course moose knuckle decided to secure the dipstick not with a bolt to the transmission but with double twist bailing wire wrapped tight around a spot on the fender that was near impossible to reach.

First trip out since last year. Made the year worth of work and sweat and blood worth. This is a whole new truck on the rocks. It flexed and drove amazing. Did things it couldn’t last year. We’ve got a ton of pictures and I’ll load them as soon as I get them.

That sucks. How you liking the BFGs so far? they look really good but also look a little blocky like they might not be great in snow and ice once they wear down about half way.

No snow and ice in central texas. I love the BFG's. Very quiet and smooth. I don't even hear them cruising around town or on the highway and I've got no doors or top to speak of. They are E rated so the sidewalls are stiff but it's a nice trade off for scraping them on rocks and them holding up.

Found the dang leak. Brand new detent cable housing cracked. Ordered a block off plate as this cable is too long and doesn’t work anyways.

Looks like I fixed the detent cable leak but of course the drain plug is leaking. Always something. Power steering box was shipped back to PSC to be warrantied. While sitting around icing myself from some birth control surgery today I went ahead and bought a couple of 12” subs and amp and wiring. Figured out how I want to do my speakers so I’ll start working on that in a couple of weeks when I can start lifting things again.

Subs and amps arrived along with their respective power kits. Also bought some more 0 gauge cables to redo the power and ground cables on the truck as well as a quick connect for the winch in 0 gauge instead of the measly 4 gauge that's on it. Was looking around and there is only one ground on the whole dang truck and that's a 4ga from battery to the frame. Going to upgrade that one to 0ga and add one from batt to body, another from batt to engine, and then engine to body. Also going to upgrade the main power wire going to the starter from 4ga to 0ga as well as the wiring going to the distro block for the cab from the starter.

I'll have an 0ga going to a distro block and then 4ga from there to the amps (one for speakers and one for sub) and then 4ga grounds from the amps to the body.

I don't currently have any electrical issues but with nearly 2000w of amp getting installed I'd prefer to head it off if I can. Now I gotta start looking for a higher amp alternator.

Went to replace the leads on my winch and found this. A12F6C19-D51F-41D5-987A-75CFE6800C05.jpeg

Now I’m contemplating if it’s even worth it or just trash it and buy a new winch.

Went ahead and bought a new winch. Badlands 12k. Also bought the two year warranty. Went home and started to unbolt the old one.

These were the bolts holding the winch to the plate.

I’ve always hated the push bar look so I discussed the matter with my plasma and came to the conclusion it needed to go. It wasn’t structural so meh.
