Black Betty - Formerly Blaze the Monster Machine

1984 K5 Project for Dad and kids
It back fired and died on me twice more on the way home. I think the timing might have slipped on it. Not sure. Didn’t see any melted wires or anything. Brake lights I figured out. Looks like my dumbass pulled the entire brake light circuit out when I pulled the trailer light circuit off. So I get to go buy and run all new wires. Yay.

Forgot pics of the radiator and ac condenser. Condenser isn’t going back in. Radiator is going to get pressure washed and put back in. Never had an issue with cooling on this truck and figure this will just make the system better.

Is that sand in your intake ports that fell down there? :doah:

Looks like vomit in your coolant passage...

A little. Gonna spend some time tonight with the shop vac and clean everything up before putting it back together.

So did the front coolant passage look more clear where its not blocked off?

Yes it did. Rusty and nasty but clear. The coolant came out a dark green and kinda murky. I'm wondering if I've got a cracked head or bad head gasket or something. I've added 3 gallons of coolant to this truck in the last year and a half and have no leaks and the oil has always come out looking normal and not milky. Just last week I filled the radiator up and it was down an inch or two when I went to drain it. This block has been bored 60 over and no clue what head work was done. Judging by everything else I've found on this truck, I wouldn't be surprised if this engine was hurt. I'm gonna yank the plugs tonight and see if anything looks off.

Got the plugs pulled. They’ve got maybe a 1000 miles on them. #8 was the nastiest by far. The rest look fine. Gonna try and get a compression tester this week.

Pleasant surprise, #8 came back at 150psi of compression. Spot checked a few others (didn’t feel like pulling headers) and they are hitting around 150psi as well.

After thinking about it, I’m gonna put it back together and run it until it blows or the other engine gets built, whichever comes first.
Awesome plan! Use the hell out of it, just sensibly. Don't float the valves, (much), keep the fluids in good shape.
:D

On something like that a leakdown is better for finding it. Compression is quick and doesn't find tiny leaks as easy, it finds major ones. Then the gauge keeps the maximum so you can't see how fast it bleeds down like a leakdown.

But I agree, keep the fluids good and run it. It may go a long time like that as long as it doesn't overheat. Or it may blow a gasket tomorrow and spew coolant out.

The lesson here is don’t be cheap and lazy and use a paper gasket instead of RTV or you’ll be pulling the transfer case out to fix it.

Transfer case is back in with a good dose of RTV. And a little example on why you change coolant. Manifold is starting to pit.
