Black Betty - Formerly Blaze the Monster Machine

1984 K5 Project for Dad and kids
Mine don't stop retracting, is like a Spanish inquisition torture device, if not that then being strapped to a table after angioplasty

Went to install a shift kit today. 4 pan flushes and filter changes and there’s still shit in the pan. Maybe because it’s missing all the check balls in the valve body? Who knows. It’s never slipped and it’s always shifted fine. Just hoping the shift kit limps it along long enough for me to afford the rebuild on the 4L80E and new Circle D converter.

So while I source some check balls I decided to tear apart dad’s old Holley carb to see why it’s always been such a bad carb. We’ve always had trouble with it dumping crap loads of fuel into his engine no matter what. The thing has maybe a 1000 miles on it. Haven’t found much yet other than some trash in one of the bowls. The shop installed some 6.5 power valves so I’m swapping those for 7.5’s. Had to stop so I didn’t get to see what size jets are in it but I’m certain they are to large.

But the coolest update today is this.

Looks awesome!

Something to mention, it looks to me like your guideplates are not aligned quite right. I would adjust them so the roller tips are better aligned with the valve stems. If you loosen the rocker studs you can slightly move the guideplates to realign the valve stems, then retorque the rocker studs. Although maybe its an illusion and not necessary. Pictures only go so far.

After a rebuild on the Holley 4150 double pumper and a TCI shift kit in the trans, I finally got to drive it around and dang. This truck is actually fun to drive. Peppy and responsive. It’s not a manual valve body but I’m having so much fun shifting it I think I’m gonna order a ratchet shifter.

Before you buy, let me get you a pic of mine.
If it's what you want I can save you money.
It never was driven.
Mike put it in my c10 and I want to put a regular stock column shifter.

Not much of a post but took it out for the first time since my last post. Idle is a bit low but it drives great. Need to play with the governor and shift modulator some. 1-2 shifts at 2000 and 2-3 shifts at 3500. Otherwise it runs and drives great.

Still waiting on the distributor and fuel pump for the 383. Mean time I’m just saving up for the 4L80e rebuild and circle d converter.

It’s really not a big deal because I’ve got other projects that are made easier with no front end. Going to cut off and redo the steering box reinforcement, clean up wiring, patch up the firewall where I removed the old AC components, and then figure out a better winch mount solution than the cobbled together one the PO came up with. You can see how far it sticks out in this picture it was only held on with 4 bolts to the frame. I’d like to get it mounted behind the bumper. Also planning on cleaning up the PO’s front fender cuts some although that’s a maybe and not a need to.

I am not questioning the front clip removal, I do the same

This project just got a whole lot bigger. Just bought a frame//body//drivetrain from @fourwheelerjeff with a much straighter and much less rustier tub on it. Going to start cutting the existing body up and scrap it and then swap the new body onto my existing frame and running gear. Or I might go and swap the axles and suspension from my current truck over to the new one. New one comes with a 350//700r4//np208 already installed. I’m very tempted to just swap my axles and suspension, my 208 transfer case (mines got the sye installed), and drop in my new 383 and bolt it up to the existing 700r4. Be a lot easier and cheaper than trying to get the spare 4l80e and converter built and installed at the moment.
