Black Betty, Rock Crawlin Trail Truck Build !!!FOR SALE!!

I have a full sheet of diamond plate that I am probably not going to use. Its yours if you want it
gabe

Damn you gabe. lol. I just went out and bought that 1/8 thick piece. its like $125 for a 4x8 sheet of 1/8" steel tread plate.

I'm regreting the thickness now cuase my 36"x48" sheet is about 60lbs.

Do you want that along the frame rail or straight back without the bends of the frame? And is that back of the cab or to the cab mounts? You do realize I cut the back of the frame off right? lol
Yeah, I realize that, just trying to judge how much from just the picture.;)

Maybe an inch or two past the back of the cab, straight back to the rear of the frame, is what I`m looking for, and if you can figure in what you hacked off, thats cool. How much did you chop off, btw? Not sure if I can go that far back because of the gas tank.

i somehow ended up with two sheets of 1/8 diamond plate steel in a trade I did a while back. I used some of one sheet to make my center console. A buddy of mine got it off craigslist a while back. And I picked it up for him, then he decided that he didnt want it, but needed something I was about to throw away.

A buddy of mine gave me a grill so I cleaned it up and Black Betty's got a face now.Ive got a somewhat rare grill support (81-82 w/ single headlight doesn't have provisions for the blinker light cause it was in the bumper) so I need to do some mods to make the lower turn signal lights fit still. The coolest thing about these trucks is how interchangable things are. Its not the grill I like the most, but gotta love FREEEBEEEEE's.
Also got the Solid diff. cover on. **BLING** :D

whos brand dye did you use when you dyed your dash pad?

Its viynl paint off the shelf from advanceautoparts. Duplicolor maybe?

Craig. - 81-82 is prolly my favorite chevy grill for that body style, but I really like the aftermarket 83-84 GMC grills (without the G.M.C. letters) the best. Single headlight version too. This 85-87 dual headlight one that I have on there now is INSANLY expensive to replace. its got all this removable trim pieces on the grill itself. If you look close in the pic im missing the little 5 inch piece of trim on the passenger side next to the headlight. $20 for that little piece from LMC truck and I havn't seen it anywhere else. That and I dont know where you can get the clips for that piece either.

When I replaced the grill on my '86, I got an aftermarket 83-84 Chevy grill. The aftermarket grill had no provisions for the Chevy Bowtie, which gives it a clean, uninterrupted look.

I painted the grill and headlight trim flat black. I think it looks good.

I see what you mean with the clean lines, but I prefer to have a massive bowtie on the front of my truck.

Me too. It just looks generic without the bowtie. It just screams "cheap knockoff" IMHO :dunno:

That did go through my mind. A big factor was price. I paid MUCH less for a non-OEM grill. Once I got it, I actually liked it better. But it fits in with my planned color scheme / theme for the truck, which is all black and white, no visible chrome.

got a headlight and tail light harness at pull a part on Saturday. I also got some 52" rear springs that Im gonna use up front. Harnesses are CHEAP; only $7. If you get an entire car harness w/ fuse block its only $12. Im gonna go one day and stock up on all those GM weather pac connectors so I have some layin around.

I just got done wiring in all the lights on the truck. The headlight harness was basically a bolt in, all I needed was to replace the bulbs. I made a really nice tail light harness out of the factory one for my LED lights. Soldered all the connections and used shrink tube. I dont have any back-up lights yet, but I ran the wire back so I can add them when I get them. I was surprised everything worked. The turn signal switch, the high/low beam switch, the headlight switch, the brake light switch. The only thing that was bad was the Hazzard flasher unit. I still need to modify the radiator support to fit the lens for the turn signals though.

Awesome build!!! You mentioned that you are going to modify the grill to make provisions for the turn signals, how are you going to do that? The reason I ask is I have an '84 that has the turn signals in the grill but it's all busted up and I also have a perfect '81 grill, but of course no turn signals in the grill 'cause in '81 they were in the bumper.

I actually did it last night and just had to cut openings out in the core support so the back of the turn signal housing would go in all the way. I used self tapping screws to hold the light housing in.

You must have an 84 dual headlight version. The single headlight version had blinkers below the headlight. If I were you I'd get the 83-84 single headlight bezels and some headlight buckets out of the junkyard. the bezels are $13 each from LMC truck. All you'd have to do is pull out your upper and lower headlight bucket and I think the turn light would screw right in. they could be found in the junkyard but are $50 a pair from LMC. You could modify your headlight harness, but one from the junkyard would only cost a few bucks. All the single headlight ones are about the same.

Awesome, thanks for the great advice, I hadn't even considered mounting to the core support. Thanks. Keep up the great work!!

got the brake lines all made and everything plumbed and bled out. Ordered some corbeau seats and harnesses, got some ford shock towers for the front.

Looking at the pics of the lines, they don't look like they will be long enough when you flex.
