Black Rock Desert Expedition Report + Pictures

Thanks for sharing always love your trips and pictures. Great job:waytogo:

Epic trip man. Thanks for posting. I may steal some of those landscape photos for my computer desktop background if you don't mind. First class photography as always!

I think the white sand is salt deposits??

I believe the reason you get cold in the back of a truck/Blazer is because there's a lot of air circulating up under you. Same reason you get cold sleeping on an air mattress. I figured this out a couple of years ago when I swapped from using a tent to a hammock. Even during the summer, I have to put a Thermarest in the hammock or I'll get cold.

Again, thanks for sharing.

If you need a higher resolution image, let me know. I posted small res (sort of) images here. Just don't be a creeper and put my wife on your desktop. :wink1:

That's my suspicion too. In the next day or so I'm going to spend a very significant amount of time down at the DIY carwash pressure washing my pristine underbody.

We were on our nice insulated sleeping pads that we use to sleep on snow (r-value of 7). That's why it struck me so strange. Aside from the volume of space in the truck, we have only 2 other theories: (1) The truck got humid from our breath. Our tent vents well and never accumulates moisture. Cold + humid = really cold. But, I don't buy this theory for our problem - it just seems too drastic a shift to be this problem. (2) We have been doing Crossfit for 10 months now, and have gotten fairly lean by comparison to last winter. Perhaps our reduced body fat means we need to step up our insulation?

Beautiful sights, quality photos and an excellent trip report as usual! Nice job! These kinda trips really have me chomping at the bit to finish my suburban.

I haven't really looked into expedition type trips near Vegas because there's so much available to me here in Northern Nevada - but I'd love to see pics of what you find!

Colby,

Really enjoy your pictures and reading about your trips. Always cools stuff.

As to the problem with getting cold at night, I will simply submit this, You are in the middle of nowhere with your woman with you. If you are getting cold, I think you are doing something wrong.:D

One of my favorite areas of the state. We travel through Gerlach a lot on hunting trips. The white dust is alkali, northwest nevada is full of it. A lot of the land up there is used as free range for cattle and it's not uncommon to run into cattle drives or round ups in the fall. The stars are incredible with no light pollution and the full moon seems like damn near daylight. Did you run past/through soldier meadows?

I don't know how much dust y'all get out in the midwest, but in the desert, it's gritty and dusty. Grit and grime needs to remain out of my pants. 'Nuff said.... :D

We did go through Soldier Meadows. Very pretty. We didn't really stop there, tho. We were surprised to see some creeks and such still flowing. What do you guys hunt up there?

We've gone deer hunting up by soldier meadows and summit lake, also in the granite mountains west of black rock. The area northwest of gerlach is home to a couple of our favorite chukar hunting spots. The people at solider meadows are really nice and rent out rooms for the night and feed you breakfast too. My family has been hunting and exploring northern washoe, pershing and humboldt counties for 4 generations.

Rad. That homestead they've got in Soldier Meadows looks really cool. We didn't get very close, but I was impressed with how well established and well kept it looked.

It's interesting what you say about staying warm; on my last little camping trip, I opened the wing windows (as usual) and although it only got down in the mid 30's, I did stay plenty warm in my Suburban. 3" futon pad, regular sleeping bag, and a cold weather bag on top of that. I wonder if keeping those windows cracked let the moisture out and didn't freeze us...

Anyway, dude, awesome photos; exactly the stuff I'd like to go out and see!

I am considering putting together a condensed article version of this trip and sending it to 4Wheeler, but they have had 3 articles on this general area in the last decade. Do you think it's worth the work to take the chance?

Worst they can do is say no

Well, I'll give it a try. I was imagining that writing some articles on our expeditions would be a cool way to supplement our income.
