Black Rock Desert Expedition Report + Pictures

Send it to other publishing companies too. You never know. Plus then you'll be on their radar.

Well, Four Wheeler is published by Source Interlink. They have like 4 or 5 off road mags. I would start there. Then just go to your local newsstand and look on the page that lists the editors and the publishers. Get on their websites and see how to make submissions. Who knows - you may be the next free lance writer whose work is in demand.

Awesome pics!
Just added Black rock desert to my list of places to go if I ever visit the US :waytogo:

That's a good plan, but it is a long long distance from anything you may come to visit, unless Lake Tahoe I on your list. Speaking of US-Scandanavian travel, we're going to Iceland and Norway next August, but the nearest we'll be to Sweden is Oslo. :)

Colby, it sure doesn't hurt to send in a story & photos. Back in the day, pre-GM, I took a trip to the Lost Coast in my '87 Wagoneer. We fully photographed the trip. I did a write up, included the photos, and sent it in to Jeep Junkie.

They ended up printing the story in the center of the magazine! Dang that was cool. Now if I could only find that mag...

That is cool. I hope you can find the magazine because I'd love to know where to do an expedition on the Lost Coast. I've always wanted to explore there, but never have. I didn't trust my truck enough when I lived in Ashland, OR to take a trip that far, and now I'm further away. But, I'd make the trip for the right trail!

This is my kind of thread! Awesome trip Colby! :waytogo: I would love to tour that area someday. The best feeling in the world is being out in the desert someplace away from civilization. Hell, I would rather explore the UT, AZ, NV and CA deserts more than going to play the mountains in my very own state. Too many people from Texas on ATVs in the mountains here, not to mention too many closed trails and just too many asshats in general.

Maybe I missed it, but did you take a SPOT or anything? Pretty remote do a solo rig trip without some way to communicate to peeps that would come rescue you if something went wrong.

Nope. I only had my CB. We're pretty good hikers, so it didn't bother us much. We had a lot of our backpacking equipment, and there's frequent enough springs that we could pick a walking route back to Gerlach where we'd have access to water (we brought our filter). But, you'd definitely want to be real secure with the reliability of your vehicle out there!

CB’s are better than nothing but even if you are in good shape and have the equipment to backpack out, I would still recommend a SPOT or InReach when getting that far off the beaten path. Things can go wrong real fast where you can find yourself in a position where you can’t walk, etc. If anything else having a SPOT makes reliving the trip much more fun when looking back at your tracks. Also helps plan your next trip to the area. Here is an example of a SPOT Adventures summary & another from 2010. The Adventures Summary is pretty cool because you can flip it over to satellite view and zoom in to see the actual lay of the land. Always fun to see where you went once you get home.

All of you pictures are awesome but I especially like this one. She really did a nice job tracing the cracked up dirt :waytogo:

We’re going to have to meet up for a desert trip sometime.

Very cool pics, thanks for sharing! :waytogo: x10

Thanks. :)

Do you have any ideas in mind for places you've never been that are in the SE Oregon/N Nevada area? (For Nevadans, "Northern Nevada" refers to roughly the northern 3/4 of the state... so basically everything that isn't Vegas. :haha:)

SE Oregon is full of places with terrain/views similar to many of your pictures. The Owyhee river canyon is scenic and can be accessed in many places. Most of the roads are just rough and don't require 4wd unless it rains.

Thanks. :)

No, not really. My buddy and I have talked about checking out the Black Rock Desert in NV but haven’t really thought about much more than that in NV or even OR. There is so much to see in our neighboring Utah you could go back every year and still not see it all. UT, AZ and CA have been our primary annual desert trip destinations. We are already planning on going back to the Utah Canyonlands in May of 2014 after the Overland Expo. That will be another 8 to 10 day trip like we usually do every year. Someday we’ll hit up Northern NV.

I did a camping trip as a kid with men in my family in the Steens Mountains in my dad's Isuzu Trooper. That's when I fell in love with camping and "four-wheeling" (it was glorified gravel roads...)." I've been wanting to go back ever since. As an adult, I've made 2 plans to do it, but it didn't work out. I want to compare the playa on the east side of the Steens to the Black Rock.

HEy Colby, hopefully we can get that idea I had into full swing by next year. :thumb:

If anything, it would give folks different legs of the trip to meet up and do a day here or there.

Yeah, I think that'd be cool. I'll do some more research on it. It might be nice to do a Fall 2014 trip. Fall 2014, however, may be a difficult time for me. I graduate with my graduate degree this coming spring, have a month off, then I go to Norway for a month. That means that late August I should start a full time job, which means it might be difficult for me to swing anything more than a 3 day weekend. But, perhaps I leave on a Thursday evening and return on a Sunday evening, and join you somewhere for a full 3 days.
