the k5 has this blanket that is attached under the hood. it is dirty and oily. what purpose does this serve? if i remove it would would be good to replace it with or can i just remove it and not replace it?

in the event of an engine fire, the plastic things would melt and the blanket would fall on the engine smothering the fire.

You can remove it, but it does provide a bit of insulation for the paint on the hood. And, as obijuan mentioned, it is designed to help smother a fire. I have never seen one actually used this way, so I can't speak to its effectiveness.

iirc, LMC makes replacements... i ditched mine...

I've seen cars that have removed them and the paint on the hood got baked off from the heat. The one in my old Jimmy got tore out after a mud bog and never got replaced. I never had any issues.

And I never thought of it as a fire blanket, that's a good point.

I can't tell that mine ever had a blanket, but come to think of it, the paint on the hood did look really bad when I got it. Does it really weigh 40 lbs.?

Mine still had it maybe because it was from North Dakota?

Yep, I can confirm cooked clear coat if it gets removed. It follows the pattern of the hood reinforcement exactly. Good clear where the reinforcement is, cooked anyplace there is a single layer of steel.

If your paint is shot, you can leave it off.

Interesting. That must be why I see so many trucks from these years going around with the same funny spots on the hood in the same place. I always wondered what caused that.

Thats a little rediculous to have the paint cooking off above the engine. I have never had one and the hood never seems to get too much hotter than the rest of the body.

I believe its to help insulate the engine from heat and sound. That said i tore mine off my k5 as it was oily and if there ever was a fire I'm sure it would of only accelerated the fire not help to stop it.

Meh, all I know is it was only a couple months after the pad was removed from my truck that the clear pealed off the hood in the exact pattern of reinforcement. The clear everywhere else was fine. Oh well...
