blanket attached under hood

the clear issue was GM recall stuff.. just like the ones where they overcooked the primer and had the topcoat failing.. i did TONS of them at the bodyshop back in the 80's under warranty....

Mine still had it maybe because it was from North Dakota?

Wow... the op should thank you for removing your hood to snap a pic...

My 88 and 91 still have mint "blankets". You'll have to trust me on that one though :D.

I've been wanting to take out the nasty fiberglass blanket and make a replacement out of that reflective foil insulation with the little air pockets in it. IIRC you can buy it in big sheets, but it isn't cheap. It should help a lot with the heat, a little with noise and be easy to clean.

It's a noise thing, although they are fire retardant for safety reasons. It doesn't protect the paint from engine heat, it doesn't need it. The sunlight and heat in the summertime do a good job of baking the paint from above. Good paint that is taken care of will hold up fine.

My 73 had the blanket. After the truck was repainted (PPG base/clear) about 4 years later the Original blanket gave up. Pulled the rest off. Shortly there after the clear went to crap on the hood. Took another 6 years before any other location gave up. Not saying that just the sun wont cook off the clear but I will say that without the blanket my clear failed 6 years before the clear on the rest of the truck. It definitely provides some protection.

I don't know dude.... i didn't say I bought one, i just said LMC had em... it's a long-haired asbesto's fiber-type product, iirc... held on by large headed push-in button clips...

I got one from lmc. It was a piece of crape. Had to cut to fit. Fell apart ,tore up. It was yellow on the back looked like something I could buy at the hardware store. Look for something better.

I think mine came from LMC. Used another hood as a guide and cut it to fit the freshly painted hood. The worst part is getting the push pins in. Damn hard to find the holes through the insulation.

I'm told that it makes a noticeable difference if your engine makes a lot of noise. Being that Big Ugly is a diesel and CUCV it's LOUD. I'm willing to try it and see if the engine noise is dampened at all. Not much for insulation on the CUCV's.

I think the blanket can have a big affect on the noise you hear (or don't hear) from the intake and valvetrain. I have a 2000 Ford pickup with the 4.2 V6, which is a notoriously noisy and rattly engine, and the hood has no insulation on the bottom of it. I can hear a lot of noise from the engine inside the cab, especially with the windows down. I have to turn that truck off when I'm at the drive-thru so the person taking my order can hear me, but not my truck with the Chevy V8 and loud exhaust. Go figure. If I'm not mistaken, the higher trim levels of Ford pickups (mine is an XL) had a blanket, and they seem to be a lot quieter than mine, even with the same engine.

I notice much less "diesel rattle" in The Blazer than I do Big Ugly. The Blazer has the blanket.

I think it is more of an NVH thing than anything else. I have had an engine fire and if I hadn't of had an extinguisher the whole truck would have burned and the blanket wasn't even close to coming down on the engine.

The fire was hot enough to melt most everything that wasn't steel under the hood and scorch the hood really bad.

They show at gmpartsdrect.com for $82.00. Shipped only to local fedex hub for pickup.
Need to see if my buddy that has a body shop can get me one or order it from them.

My buddy ordered me one today from GM for $93

Thanks guys, 1 more thing off my list.

That hood blanket thing served only as a place for my hair to come in contact with and make a bloomin mess of it. I tore it off and have not noticed anything different about my Jimmy.
