Blazer keeps dying...fuel problem??

Mychal! Long time no see!

Sounds like your problems are identical as my '91 Blazer. I'm subscribing to this thread so my neighbor and I can check it out on his scanner sometime soon.

WES!!! that up brotha!! Its been a while. Alot has changed around here. I am a proud first time dad as of august 3, 2007 and about a year + into my apprenticeship as a Transmission Lineman. I'll shoot you a pm!:saweet:

When my Blazer was having similar problems, and after replacing about all of the sensors, I was told about the EGR soleniod test.

Plug the EGR soleniod line and leave the EGR line open. The vacuum comes from the EGR soleniod.

When I ran this test, the motor would run fine.....when I hooked it back up, it ran like crap under load....sometimes it wouldn't let me out of the driveway.

I'm not saying that the EGR is your problem, just has the same symtoms mine had and it ended up being the EGR valve.

well, I tried unplugging the EGR valve, etc. Didnt even get to put it in gear. It started running like crap immediately at idle. Now I cant get it to stop running like crap at idle. Real rough. Exhaust smell more than ever, kinda blueish smoke. This really sucks, now I am worse off than before. Now it wont even run right at idle, hahaha!!!

Thinking I may as well buy a scan tool. They have one at the parts store its a few hundered bucks, but at least I should be able to tell whats wrong, right? Is there something that I need to look for when getting the scan tool? Some of them are just 'code readers'. They one I saw was about $250 and said it was a diagnostic scanner.
Any thoughts?

TBI is a MAP system not an MAF system. You won't have an MAF sensor on your truck.

Did you plug the vacuum line? Was there vauum to the valve at idle? If you disconnected the EGR and it changed for the worse, either look to see what you knocked loose, or why messing with the EGR made a difference.

Does this thing have a MAF sensor?? (mass air flow, right?) I've seen MAT and MAP sensor, but not MAF.........

what type of scanner should I pick up? Would they have it at autozone? I assume you mean something other than this: http://www.autozone.com/R,NONAPP23579/store,5715/initialAction,accessoryProductDetail/shopping/accessoryProductDetail.htm

I may as well pick one up as I am running out of sensors to replace:doah: :eek1: :D

Thanks!!!

Ooppps My bad typo. I ment MAP sorry.
As for the scanner dont get one of those cheapo code readers. you can do the same thing with a paper clip.
For a scanner get an Auto x ray EZ Read AX2000 It scanns all OBD1 vehicles and does all OBD2 also. They usually sell around $200 and well worth the money. I have one and use it on all my cars.
Whatever scanner you get make sure it is for GM OBD1 and displays operating data so you can see the output data that the ECM sees from the sensors.
that way you can see the TPS working, MAP/MAF values, O2 sensor voltage ECT, ECT, so you know if they are working or not.

So this is the one you have? Even though it lists it as a code reader and not a scanner? http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=90

here is the one I was looking at at my local Kragen store:
http://www.autobarn.net/equus-3120-obd-tool-kit.html

I'll go and check them out today $200 isnt bad condsidering you can see whats ACTUALLY going on.

Ebay isn't a bad source either, you might check there for used.

The first one linked sure doesn't get very descriptive, even in the manual. My Autoxray XP240 does OBD1, and does let you actually monitor the data stream. This one is NOT upgradeable like some other Autoxray products, but that should only make a used one cheaper. :)

Even your second link leaves some question as to whether it gives you real time data, as it too only talks about pulling codes for OBD1. I would *think* they would get all the OBD1 data too, but I wouldn't shell out the money without knowing for sure.

I have an older model(EZ link 2000) than the one you linked to. But it is pretty much the same scanner. When I bought it it was OBD1 only but I upgraded it over the net to read OBD2.

The Equus scanner looks like it will work good for you too. It looks like it displays operating data. But before you buy ask to read the manual to be sure.

As dorian said Ebay is a good place to get a scanner if you are not in a hurry.

One thing you might try, beings messing with the egr made it run worse. Pull the egr off and clean it with carb spray. Make sure it moves freely and the valve is not stuck open.

It sucks that the best thing you can do right now is throw parts into your rig. I went through that a couple of times, but I do have new parts.

Your original problem (intermittently cutting off) might also be the oil pressure switch. Mine was going bad, and had a bad connection. Truck would sometimes start, sometimes not, and die while driving. Made the connection better, started right up, then changed out the switch and running like a champ. This is the switch behind the dist, not the pressure sending unit on driver's side near the exhaust manifold.
