anything I should worry about? The EGR on my 99 Yukon has "failed" but I don't feel like putting down $150 for a new one, especially when its job is to pump oxygen-poor air into my engine. That makes no sense. Stoopid EPA:rolleyes:

Anyways, it's stuck open and causing my motor to stumble very extremely badly at low revs and light throttle. I forsee nothing wrong other than the computer freaking out for whatever reason. The check engine light is already on for the EGR.

Thanks for your help.

EGR helps to reduce cylinder temps which helps to keep the engine from detonating. I would replace the valve if I were you.

Really? That doesn't make sense either. Because exhaust gas is hot. Maybe going up a grade in fuel could overcome that.:dunno:

A used one will get you by fine--junkyards sell things like EGR valves and computer sensors for pennies versus dollars..I try used parts like these all the time when I'm low on cash or trying to help out a friend who isn't rich and cant afford to put out a few hundred bucks on parts that "might" fix it...

Junkyard....definitely.

Picked up a $60 MAP sensor for $8.

The "u-pick" junkyard also guarentees the part so if it doesn't work, return it for credit.

egr valves improve fuel mileage, prevent detonation and do NOT hurt performance. why would you want to get rid of it? thats a win-win.
junkyard is a good idea, but chevy egr valves are junk, so the chances of getting another bad one is a little high, so atleast look for the shiniest one.

rock auto gas 2 left on closeout for $49
and the better ones are $115

I have cleaned mine plenty of times. Take it off, use carb cleaner and wire brush and goto town cleaning all the carbon off making sure it moves in and out freely. Cheaper than buying even a used one

Well I blocked the egr as an experiment to see what happens. Initial reaction: positive. It now idles silky smooth, throttle response is better, it doesn't stumble anywhere, anytime, at all. Going up a hill, part throttle, low revs, NO pinging/detonation. Same hill, full throttle, high revs, NO pinging/detonation there either. In all, it runs much better than it ever did, even when it was new (grampa let me drive it once when I was 14)

Fuel economy is yet to be said. I am going to do a 300 mile trip on Friday and I will be carefully monitoring economy.

I honestly can't see how feeding HOT exhaust gas into the cylinder can COOL the charge. Does not compute.:dunno: Maybe my brain is better at grasping particle physics, but who knows?

that exhaust gas is taking up space in the combustion chamber, that would normally have a fuel/air charge in it. so when the engine fires, it would be firing the smaller fuel/air charge, making a smaller bang, and lower temp.

doesn't that make smaller power....

Light throttle was when the stuck open egr valve was the most problematic. Before I blocked it, I couldn't cruise at anything less than 1,300 rpm, or 35 mph. It was becoming undrivable below those speeds until I had to get into the throttle to maintain 25 mph, then all a sudden it would light up and take off and I'd have to let off and coast down. Now, I literally bump the throttle, then coast for a long time, bump it ever so slightly, then coast. It never did that. Unless it develops a horrendous ping or misfires, I don't see the need for it.

thats why they only work under cruise, or light throttle

I never thought about that...I only ever checked to see if they were stuck or not....:doah::bow:

If nothing else have the ecm reflashed to remove it all together maybe.
Speaking of which... as soon as I get the Flowmaster muffler off and a decent set of dual mufflers, I need to find a speed shop that will do that to take the greatest advantage of my setup.
