Blower motor resistor nightmare!

If you have a test light or multimeter, look for voltage at that relay. Whichever wire is biggest - seems like it's red, but I can't remember. There is a fuse under the dash for the heater.

ok, i think i've pinpointed the problem but i need a little more help. i got the relay, tested the blower motor, no good, replaced the blower motor, still nothing. tore into dash to expose heater controls and here's what i found:
the selector (a/c, heat, vent, defrost, etc) and the low/med/hi switch were both unplugged. i found one of the harnesses which i believe goes to the selector (horizontal switch) but cant find anything to plug into the low/high (vertical switch). i did however find 2 cut wires, orange and brown. does anyone have a diagram or could tell me if im on the right track here? there are supposed to be 2 harnesses for these 2 switches correct?

Here is a scan from my Haynes book#24064. You really ought to pick one up for yourself, considering it sounds like someone did some hacking.
You need to be looking at the LEFT image as you stated you have A/C.
Hope this helps ya.

P.S. Skimming through the pages it looks like the org&bro wires you found """MIGHT""" be for the radio

thank you trusty for the diagram, got it figured out now. and yes you were correct, the org/brown wires were for something else. as i pulled up on the harness i exposed the other plug (working with flash light) but provided diagram led me in the right direction. and yes someone definitely did some serious hacking, the plugs are all busted up, and earlier this month had to rewire taillights to the front of the truck to take a sticker. what a mess! thanks again trusty.

Could be a bad motor or your wiring might be a little messed up. Is it doing it at all speeds?
Try running it directly from battery to see if it still whines.
When I was diagnosing my Hi fan circuit, I ran a jumper where I shouldn't have and the motor made a whining noise(don't remember where I ran the jumper).

yeah, it's doing it at all speeds. the wiring being messed up is a good possibility, but the 2 harnesses for the control box only fit in one way correct? i don't believe they are on backwards, and the switches seem to be functioning properly. i will try the jumper wire.

Isn't the blower motor grounded by the motor frame? I don't think you can hook it up backwards. Check and make sure the fan is on right (not sure if it will go on wrong) and make sure nothing has gotten in the fan, like a straw or something. If it is OK, take it back to where you bought it.

only thing i've noticed not working is the first speed. med and hi work but when you put it to hi it dims the headlights for a moment. is this because of the resistor? that, and the selector "sounds" like it's working, but air is coming out of all vents, mostly the floor, but i don't think that's the cause of the noise. and i'm guessing the vapor rolling out of the vents is because of the heater core? it looks like smoke, even after you get out of the vehicle, it lingers. which sucks pretty bad cause its like 10 below up here right now. nothing is wedged in the motor, and i was gonna try the old one again, but it makes a similar noise to the one in it now when just spinning the squirrel cage by hand.
