Blue85 gets restored in 2009: Painted!

Hey Blue, the atomizing/orange peel I had problems with too, Paul suggested using 40-45# air @ the gun, and thinning a little more. That and my tip was to big really for ideal color, but it worked pretty good.
I thinned to 75% on my 2nd color coat, and clear and it came out much better.

I sanded down the top and shot it again with the new setup, which worked pretty good. The color looked good, so I shot it with clear to make sure that I had a working process.

The pictures are actually too grainy to show the shine. My only complaint is that the dust is noticeable up close. I'm hoping that I can polish some of that out.

The truck is Blue!

I plan to mask and spray the silver tomorrow. Then I'll shoot the clear on another day.

The top looks pretty good I think....is the dust your talking about airborne dust that dropped in the paint, or paint dust from overspray?
Either way a wetsand with 1200, and some buffing should make it look real nice.

I was prepped to shoot the silver about midnight last night. Unfortunately, it started raining about 11:30.

I shot the silver last night, just like I had practiced, but I still had issues with runs, + one spot where the metallic pattern got screwed up. The only way I found to make it work is keep the gun back almost a foot from the surface and make a lot of light passes. Anything resembling wet just runs or the metallic swims around.

So I sanded the silver and now I'm ready to shoot again. This time I will be more careful on the corners and wait longer between passes. Thank goodness for base/clear - getting the metallic right as a single stage looks pretty hard.

I shot the silver again this morning, running the gun really light. I made dozens of passes, each barely laying paint down. The finish is not very shiny, but the color is very consistent.

You're not supposed to sand metallic, but can't I still scuff it before I shoot the clear?

I got up at 5:30 (am) to do the silver and had the clear in the gun by midnight so I made the 18-hour re-coat window for the silver and avoided the issue of scuffing it.

I will give just one preview picture before I unmask and start putting everything back together.

In spite of the run issues, that looks really good. I hope mine can come out that nice, and with about the same colors you have there. I even want the same lines, so when I restore the chrome trim it will cover the color change lines.

hmmm, missed this thread...

looks good! nice color combo.... :D

btw, those heavy metallic blotchy areas are called mottling...

in some weird, masochistic way, I miss painting cars for a living...:haha:

Hey Blue looks like things are turning out pretty good for ya. Mistakes helps ya learn better for next time. Ask me; I know. If only I could remember from one paint to the next.

As much of a noob as I am, I am amazed at the emergency repair that I pulled off. I was pushed to shoot the clear on a certain night because rain was forecasted for the next few days and I had some other committments. I had a couple of minor runs in the color, which I was quickly fixing up. On one of them, I sanded through the color! After my rage subsided, I masked a small area around that spot and sprayed a few coats of color on it. Then I put a halogen light on it for a couple of hours. It barely seemed cured when I sanded it and it looked "different" than the surrounding area, but with water on it, it blended in. So I shot the clear and I can't even find that spot any more.

I love it when **** happens in a good way.

Cool stuff Blue.

Strangely enough, I don't have any good pictures yet. The first thing I did after I put the truck together was to go up North and head right into the woods!

Here's the only pic I have with the truck in it.

Since there are a few runs in the clear, I will probably end up sanding and polishing all of the clear. We'll see how the motivation flows.

Minus the fender flares, that is almost exactly what I am planning for my Blazer. I want the blue a bit darker, but that is the layout I am going for. Although mine will be getting all the original chrome.

That turned out pretty nice.:waytogo:
