cool put up some more pics. do a burnout or somthing cool. nice buy did it say 2300 on ebay?

The person who was selling it had never sold on ebay, and i was local. So since she didn't have her reserve met at the time of my offer, she canceled the auction.

I paid way more than 2, but it was worth it.

Random update, but most pics here!

I've added a DDM HID kit, put in a newer bmw head unit, and wired up a direct ipod controller. Besides that, im commuting in it, and driving it like i stole it!

Current problem is SRS light is on. Code read, resistance high in drivers side front firing circuit.

Going to tear it apart and run a continuity test on the little coiled wire firing deal, im sure it jsut needs to be replaced.

Also, wierd play in steering column right behind the wheel, bearings/bushings have got to be toast!

We'll see!

Nice car! That is a super rare car. They are literally the best car we ever made. In all my years with BMW I have seen two E34 540's with a six speed, last one was in 2002! Shoot me the last 7 of your VIn and I will get you your BMW history. That E12 was super clean, like cleanest I've seen in awhile. They all needed headgaskets though. Did it still have the thermal reactors? Those things were the source of a lot of headgasket issues since they ran so hot. BMW had such an image problem after that car, thats one reason why they changed the badge to a 528 besides the drop in displacement............

Airbag light, Its usually the Spiral spring behind the wheel that causes that.

The loose column, could be a couple things, there is a bearing in the upper column, and a nut under the dash on the shaft, check those.

Mike

The last 7 of my VIN is GA64143.

Yah, i looked a while to find this one. Actually bought a 94 530i/5 speed, but didnt' drive it hard enough during the test drive, and all the front end needed to be serviced. Didn't even keep it long enough to put insurance on it, or figure out how to fix the glove box...and even made a couple bucks on it :)

Ended up buying this one local after i had the owner remove it from ebay. It was the wife of the owner, who had passed away. It was more like an adoption interview than a test drive, as she wanted the car to go to a good home. So i made her feel good about it, made her a fair offer, showed her some comparables to back up my offer, and drove it home a few days later.

I don't see where the mods are listed her in this thread, so here goes. This is how i bought it:

Turbine II Wheels
Goodyear Eagle F1's, almost new
Koni Adjustables
Eilbach Springs/Swaybars
Racing Dynamics Strut Brace
Cross Drilled Rotors/painted calipers
Intake (more for noise than anything, have heard the OE one flows better)
Jim Conforti Chip
UUC Short throw shifter

Had to do an inspection II right after i got it, but worked through it on my own.

Funny thing about that E12 is the tweaker i sold it to ran it for a month or so, had overheating problems, sold it to someone else. I saw it back on craigslist as a parts car....and i attempted to buy it back and fix it again. Never did hear back from the guy though.

Planning on the spiral spring replacement, and will see what i find in the column. The play is vertical at the very top of the column, so the wheel can move up/down in the column. Hard to explain. I'll take pictures when i get in there.

I added some more pics to the Facebook link above.

I wasn't specifically looking for black, but it looks sweet. Really wanted Grey interior, but that dove grey wears so bad on used bmw's. So black/tan wasn't a bad compromise on what was the perfect car otherwise.

Well, found the problem:

I'm thinking that white wire is supposed to be connected next to the red wire into that orange thingy:doah:

I guess i COULD try and fix it, but rather than rig something funky on an airbag circuit, im ordering a new spiral spring deal. Wish all the pics/explanations in the bentley manual were for my Airbag II system instead of the Airbag I system though......

Didn't find anything that would cause the play in teh steering, shaft feels super tight when wheel is removed, and when wheel is reinstalled. Maybe the wheel had worked loose over the years or something....and jsut needed to have all bushings re centered and thightened up? We'll see.

I would have to look at it. It is probably the upper column bearing.

The airbag wiring, good guess. I would replace the whole slip ring.

I got your BMW history, but I need your email, its too big to post.

Got the slip ring in the mail today, will install tonight.

Do the connectors that plug into the airbag matter which way they go? It looks like it could go either way, and i'm not sure which was it was facing when i took it out. If it matters, ill probably plug it in whatever way pics from someone else's How-to show it.

Ok, got it all back together, code cleared, all is good! No more airbag light!

And the play in the steering wheel is from the telescope mechanism. The column telescopes, but the splined steering shaft seems to bind. Gotta loosen the adjuster nut at the bottom and see if i can get it to retract. Either that, or leave it where its tight, about 3/4" of an inch closer to me than i like.

And now, with my move to the mountains, I sold my 550i to a friend. Picked up a 2008 335xi coupe, 6 speed. Awd for the non BMW guys.

Came with some terrible rims, but got rid of them for some stockers and winter tires.

I have never been a fan of the BMW, mainly from my encounters with all the ****heads that drive them in Fresno, but you sir have built a nice one there. And you're actually going to use it! Not just back and forth to starbucks and the hair salon. :waytogo:

Yes, there are a lot of d-bags that drive them. All mine have been reasonable purchases, used, that I do all the maintenance on. This is my first one with some sort of warranty, and truthfully, its because i didn't' want another project car.

Yes, parts are expensive. But, to me, its worth it. I get excited every time I fire it up, and when you have long commutes, this is my time to unwind.

The cars are brilliant, and you almost never say "why did they do this like this". Everything is done with a purpose, and done very well.

I thought my 4.8L V8 in the last 550i I had was quick. Say hello to the turbo straight six in this one! This thing wants to be punished all the time.

Bmw is known for their straight six's, and even though this is a turbo, it still revs smoother than you can imagine. Its down at the tire shop getting the snow tires / TMPS sensors sorted out. Can't wait to take it for a rip!

I will never forget this story my wife told me:

She was loading our kids in our Superduty while parked next to a BMW down in Fresno. Traffic is backed up in the parking lot so she cant back out. As she finishes up with the kids the owner of the BMW unlocks his car and looks at her with distaste and asks, "How can you drive that thing?" She responds by rolling down the window, looks him in the eye, "Like This!" and proceeds to drive straight over the curb and out onto the clear road ahead leaving him behind to wait for traffic to clear.

So it has been our inside joke about people in BMWs being to self important to understand anything.

I hope you don't take offense because I mean none to you.

On another note I have always heard amazing things about their I6 engines.

Considering I go back and forth between my burb and my bmw, I'm not offended.

But yes, there are a lot of dbags in expensive cars.

I mostly laugh when people judge my cars. I'd drive my $25k 550i to the jobsite, and park next to 2 brand new F150's, 1 ecoboost and one platinum. The platinum was close to 2x the cost of my car. Yet, I was the spoiled asshole for driving the BMW  Hell, I got 90% of that reaction when i was in my $5k 540i.

All sorts of people always asked if it was my Project Manager's. He was driving a brand new Tacoma, yet I looked out of place in the BMW. Whatever:whistle::haha:

:haha: Its funny cuz its true. I'm probably $70k deep with my F-250:eek1: Not proud of that, more ashamed.:doah:
