Body changes between 76 to 86 Suburban? Not what your thinking...

What's it even matter? It's obviously hacked together and with no vin or paperwork it's not registerable. I'd say it's destined to be parted out then scrapped.

Well I have a hot rod shop and the last thing I need to be hacking up a car with no serial number, no pink or worse yet not matching, a license plate that hasn't been registered in years with a brand new 2013 sticker on it. Then have one of my CHP Buddy's stop by for a visit. This aint no chop shop and I have to keep it legal! The parts are wonderful and Id love to have them for the price. But it just plain isn't worth the possible consequences. Here in So Cal you cant junk a body with out the vin and they prefer pink.

I completely understand, what I was implying was it needs to go back to the original owner and let him deal with it. Once he has it about all he could do is chop it up and part it out.
It's the same here as far as scrapping whole cars but if you part the body and drivetrain you can chop up the tub and frame and they don't really say anything.

I think you need to check two locations, the glove box cover if the sticker is still legible will have the VIN on it, and the frame is your next bet.
If the frame matches the pink, it's all you need in CA, you need the Frame OR the cab, not necessarily both.
If the frame matches then it's legit and no one can say anything.
But as I said check the glove box, it's the first place the DMV checks for a corrobrating VIN when they do their VIN verification.
They do say there are other locations where you can find numbers on the tub, but my guess is they are under, and probably very hard to get to.

Roger that! I really think my buddy did'nt really understand what his son was up to and was just trying to help out the son. If they could wright up a receipt to me with the correct info attached I would feel fine doing that. Or check the frame number and see if it was on the no fly list then do what ever is appropriate.

Well a turn of events here in the last 5 minutes. Pops called and said the frame was swapped. So Im guessing the number is on top of the passenger frame rail between the front door and the rear tire? Anyway that is were the 80 trucks are? Pops also says it is actually registered this year. The son has a residence in the back country where it is a smog check free zone of some type? Nothing on the glove box lid. Now Im going fishing for a frame number. Fingers are crossed.

If it's a 77 the VIN is on the driver side rear door jamb, did you check there? That would be the C pillar if I am not mistaken.

That is where my 74 VIN is, not on the dash.

Havent looked at the tail lights? Need to remove them or is it embossed in the lens?

Next time you might actually read my original post before ya ask. :doah: :haha:

Any way, don't bother, nothing there for you to see.
But I'd bet the ECM has a date of manufacture sticker/QC sticker on it if you're still looking for a relative date.

What ECM?
If it is a 77 04 80 or even up 86 it will not have an ECM.
And having TBI doesn't necessarily mean it came with it.
He needs tub numbers or Frame numbers, everything else could have been changed already and not be original, even the front clip, many people do that.

Not finding a number on top of the frame. Any idea where the frame number is hidden on a 77 Burb? :D nothing on any doors or jambs at all.

Carb engine. by the remaining smog equipment id guess 86ish.

Let's see, engine has been replaced, ppl saying dash/front clip is late 80s early 90, and .... no OBD connector! :doah:
Seems like somebody was 'Jumping to Conclusions'.

If memory serves correctly there might be a sticker inside the door panels that show when they were made or the tail light housing might have a date imprinted in the plastic on the back side. But I may be thinking of something else. Don't know if you have those items available to you. If all else fails you could try carbon dating.

Ill be damned... Made one of those same mistakes. :haha: Guess I should be up set with ya for pointing this out. :thumb: You Hater!

Well I'm feeling a bunch better about this now. A few phone calls returned by pops and son and I was close. Two burbs to make one. The 77 body and 86 pink and frame went to salvage. The 86 body and parts went to the 77 frame with the 77 pink. WOW, Thanks Iceman for the frame info. I went to the link below and found the matching number locations on the frame that is also on the pink. So I'm guessing that's good enough? I think its time i even kiss and make up with sweetk30 now that im not so tense. Thanks again guys for all the help.
