Wondering if bookshelf speakers would sound OK in a car stereo application.
My concern is the difference in ohm rating.
For example, an Alpine 6x9 is rated 4 ohms.
Bookshelf speakers are rated 8 ohms nominal, 4 ohm minimum.
edit- (The ones I saw online aren't available any more)

Would there be lower volume....or would the stereo work harder powering these speakers?
I have a car they would fit great in, so that's the reason for the question.

Thanks!

the big problem i see is what the cones are made from. outdoor/ car speakers have to deal with a much harsher environment that speakers designed to work in your home. if you don't want or don't have the mounting spaces for regular car speakers, i'd look at some enclosed outdoor speakers or marine speakers before i used bookshelfs.

something like these for example.

Those are pretty cool....might work just fine for my car. It's for my baja bug that sees a lot of dirt time, so weatherproof speaker enclosures is a very good idea. Thanks for the links!

hey those will just fall apart. they are not ment to be bouncing around and deal with the enviornment. you will waste your time. they will work for a month maybe longer but eather way they wont hold up. if you want ones just get marine speakers you put in a boat. they can get wet dirty everything. thats what they are built for so that is what you want

4 ohm speakers will be louder then 8 ohm. how long they last will depend on the enviroment they are exposed to. I ran house speakers (8 ohm) in a '72 Nova for 2 years. Best factory AM you ever heard!!!!

Proof AM can sound good!! And I used to listen to AM......too many years ago

OK guys, you convinced me.....bookshelf speakers aren't the way to go. That's OK. You saved me time and a bit of money.

Since my truck is a CUCV and didn't have a factory stereo, I just cut holes in the doors using the template that came on the box of my speakers (pioneer 6x9). The other thing you can do is buy or make some truck boxes, bolt them to the floor of you rig, and you have car speakers in a bookshelf package.
