Bought a \'76 K5 with granny 4 speed and 350...what gears are in it?

It looks like everything is stock so can anyone tell me what gears would have originally come in this beast? Or even give me a site where I could cross reference the vin number to find out??

I had a '73 K5 that came with a 4spd/205 and a 350. It had 3.73 gears... but theres always the possibility of 3.07 gears also.

Does it have a sticker in the glovebox or under the hood listing factory equipment? Sometimes those list gear ratios.

The front end should be a Dana 44 and have a tag attched to one of the cover bolts. Should either say "3.07 43-14" or "3.73 41-11".

thats what worries me...it has a 10 bolt in the front with locking hubs. I have the glove box sticker but it didnt list the gear ratio like my 82 did.

and what is option number "13LK" it says L78-15-D 4+2 B.B.TB then under that is "16T5" Chalet Camper Conver.

Sounds like it could have been one of those Chalet Blazers.

The front is a 10 bolt? Is the rear a 12 bolt?

Umm, lemme just point out that a '75 *model* year wouldn't have a Chalet -- '75's are full-convertible.

Could be a '76 model year *made* in '75. Lemme stink ... VIN should look like CKY186F000000. C = Chevy, K=4WD, Y=350 4bbl (could be other), 8=Blazer, 6=1976 model, F=Flint MI (plant of manufacture), 000000=serial # of production.

If yours is CKY185F000000, I wanna see a scan of the RPO sheet and a pic of the truck /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You *sure* the front is a 10-bolt and not a Dana 44? Check out ... umm ... CK5's axle ID guide if you're unsure.

Anyway, that RPO sheet with all the option codes will be your best bet; the VIN doesn't have gear ratios in it (just engine type.)

The one you posted is a tire size, I do believe. Could be up to three or four tire size RPO's, as I recall, for front, rear, spare, etc.

There are lists of RPO's floating around on the net, but they change from year to year. If you look at the descriptions hard enough, eventually they'll make sense, or post em up here or PM me offline as I (obviously) like to yap about such things.

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif I meant '76...i posted the wrong year (what a putz). Sorry guys...typing faster than I can think. Yes the front is a 10 bolt, it has the funny "ears" on the bottom of the diff. and yes it says Chalet...whatever that means.

its this one on the site you listed:
GM CORPORATE 10-BOLT
This 10-bolt, with a larger 8 1/2-inch ring gear diameter, replaced the Dana 44 that was used in the front of some pre-1977 GMs. It can also be found in the back of 1983-91 1/2-tons and in the front of 1983-87 1/2-tons.

Hmm. Somebody done replaced your front axle at some point, so all bets are off on what ratio gears it has. You get to pull the cover and count teeth, or put it up on stands and do the revolution-counting thing.
