Bought New Truck! Go IFS Lift or SAS, Tow Rig!

I agree bb makes very flat curve but for 3 k he's never gonna get a bb and uncork it.., and yes with these mods it will pass smog. The qjet will need to be tuned for it though. Oh get some thorley headers they are smog legal also.

That's a nice truck. Make sure trans has been maintained it should be a 4l80. And it's a vortec so simple to wake up some. Headers are halfway there.

owner has service records for maintenance, and the trans and rear diff, have mag-hytec pan/cover which cools fluid and hold more.

Im thinking this truck should pull the weight I need.

Looks nice as long as it fits your $$$ and for gawds sake don't junk the cc!

I won't junk the cc, it runs great and has been a great truck. I'll probably put it up for sale though.

All I see is what he biggest selling point ever to solid axle swap those trucks. I would not touch an ifs lifted chevy

They're not bad if you take care of them. My wife's 92 was lifted from the dealer, her dad is the original owner and it drives like a dream. If you're not offroad a bunch it has much better road manners than any solid axle from the factory. Much better roll control etc.. If you swap it that changes..

I can a test to off road they are crap! I almost wreck every time I drive up our road due to it wanting to bounce all over.

The truck sold before I got there, oh well, Ill keep looking. Found a 1998 K2500 7.4, ext cab long bed, original owner 108k miles. Waiting to hear back. Its completely stock, aside from a 5th wheel setup, we will see.

Im in the same boat mines an '89 350/TH400 4.10's, luckily its my shop truck i dont currently tow with it but haul a good bit. Axles, engines, dump runs, lumber, firewood, topsoil, mulch etc. Mine has 36" HMMMV rims and tires which i know contribute the most to the lack of power. I can watch my speedo go backwards going up a decent hill empty. I usually have to pull to the shoulder and let the line of cars pass. I just picked up a fairly complete,no front accessories but everything else, '99/'00 454 Gen VI that I am going to rebuild to put in it hopefully this time next year. Probably convert it from the MPFI to TBI cam swap, headers etc. I had this same motor in a '99 2500 Sub and it had plenty of power I know I will lose some if I ditch the MPFI for the tbi.

Build a 496 with oval ports or a 383/396 small block with vortecs. The small block will be cheaper but the big block will have more grunt.

Btw nothing beats an 8.1L for gasser towing. Just saying you wouldnt be disappointed...

Found a good deal on a 454 that has 40k on it isky rv cam, waiting on other specs. 900.00, but need all the accessory stuff.

It'll cost more to build a small block than a big block if you are aiming for the same power level.

The BBC I found has stock heads from a 79 motor home. Everything is stock aside from the isky cam and Weiland intake. Having trouble finding the accessory brackets etc for it though. I also found a 90 454 stock, 40k miles, with all the accessories etc running in a truck. Would this year be an Ok base to add a better came and intake to?

It really only gains a better seal and 4 bolt mains. It would be OK though. The heads don't interchange with the mark lv very easy. I had a stock l19 with a street warrior headers tiny can and a qjet that made about 368hp and 500lbft of tq but was all done by 3980 due to the tiny cam.

After looking at some trucks, and not liking any of them compared to my CC, Ive decided to do an engine swap. Im looking at a 1979 454, Isky RV Cam stock heads. The motor is out of a motor home but gone through, although the block only has 49k original miles. The seller says the heads are stock, what would they be on a 79 motor home, im assuming since from a motor home they would be good for my needs.

Any info or upgrades I should do would be welcome. I know I have to swap the Torque Converter, and flex-plate along with accessories, but is there anything else I am missing?

Been doing some reading and seriously considering a 383 build. I have a block ready to go. Vortec heads, decent roller cam etc, I can build it, and swap my current 350 out without taking the truck down. I haven't priced machine shop or parts yet, but realistically what should I budget for a decent 383 build?

And realistically how much power difference will I have between the 383 and the 454. I will be hauling a 2500lb slide in camper, and a 4000 lbs boat mainly, then occasionally my landcruiser or jeep, all under 8k lbs.

If the machine work needs to be done figure 1-1200 for the block and heads, the main difference between a big block and small is when the torque starts, everything equal the 383 will need to spin a few hundred rpm more to do the same work, for the stuff you are doing keep it simple. Trust me a 383 with those heads will be a stump puller and will make good power. It should rev better than a big block also. The main thing I would be concerned about it getting the proper cam for those heads and make damn sure the quench is set, this will go a very long way to fight detonation.
