Boy...this sucks!!

Swap a BBC for a SBC? Ummmm......no.
tongue.gif
I had a few SBC's in the past and while some ran damn good, I am purely a BBC man.

I think I'm going "ricer shopping" this weekend!!

I know the speedo is working correctly because once ran across a speed check by the highway patrol where they had the big digital board out while they spotted a gun on you to check your speed.
This truck's speedo was right on the money with the digital board.

That's your problem.

It doesn't matter that your only 5 blocks from work, what matters is that your getting there in 15 seconds. LAY OFF THE SKINNY PEDAL 454 BOY!!!!

Another thing to consider is what gears you have? But overall the short trip game will kill ya flat out... even more if the short trip is more like running the quarter mile

Wow that's rough!. I get about 11-12 on average with both our K5's. I would guess I get about 6 on the trail in low.
I would start with the basics. A REAL good in depth tune up. Plugs, Wires if they are old, Cap button, Check the distributor for hung advance, Reset the idle mixture. Lean the choke a notch.

4 mpg is ridiculous.

i've no brand loyalty, and would not hesitate to ease a 12v cummins in my K5 if i had the coin.... it's certainly got the potential to match the numbers your big block is putting out.... oh and get you 20mpg around town... or tow 15K for days on end, if you're so inclined..... the duramax? time will tell, i sure do hope it somes out a winner, however i'm not interested in v-diesels.....

it's modified, with a large cfm carb, huh? low gears? this is with conservative driving?

then again when you put your foot into it, i'm sure it is rewarding!

displacement versus forced induction..... down low cubes will win, but at a cost in efficiency....

thought about fuel injection, with perhaps custom maps for economy and power?

PS 4mpg is around what i get on my jetski...... with 787cc's...... at WOT it'll go through 11 gallons of super in 28 minutes....

** i'm so money **

Thats bad, I mean BAD! My 2000 International with a 435HP Detroit diesel, grossing 78,000 lbs, gets 6.6 mpg. Ouch! Guess the Arabs will be inviting you to their New Years eve party!

I have got the solution to the problem! Your truck is too heavy. So, I will trade you my front 10 bolt for the front D60.
laugh.gif
I've got all the parts to convert the 10 bolt to 8 lug too.

How hard to mash the skinney petal? Stick you a tennis ball under the petal so you can only mash it down so far.

I dunno...make sure your timing's right, the spark is good, carb is adjusted properly...

Wes, this is a coincidence I'm sure! I just posted the other day that I would trade my BBC for a SBC stroker.

Check that post H E R E.

The ONLY reason I want to ditch it is because the damn thing sucks down $25 of gas EVERY OTHER DAY! Thats about 70-80 miles!
shocked.gif

Tried asking the wife if I could get another EFI pickup... she slapped that idea to the floor REAL quick.
frown.gif

I don't know what I am going to do.... I don't want to sell the truck, but DAMN! $375 / month in gas is enough to go buy a brand new car! Not to mention all the money I pour into this rig in upgrades every month...
blush.gif
wink.gif

What to do? Anybody got a stroker (or two) for me and Wes? There are two real nice 454's ready to be traded if so...

man...I got a stroker that's putting out more than a stock BB for 1500 bucks and gets 13-15/gal on the freeway. Tisk tisk...
parts are cheaper too!

Does this thing blow black smoke continuously? Surely 4 mpg would mean that it's running REALLY rich.
shocked.gif
Years ago I had a '79 Dodge van with a Pathfinder 4x4 conversion. It had a 360 with a 2-barrel carb and got a whopping 6-6.5 mpg. I installed an Edelbrock Performer intake and a Holley 600 cfm 4-barrel and mileage jumped to 11-12 mpg! With the 2-barrel on there, I was having to really stand in it all the time. But with the 4-barrel, it would get up to speed quickly and then just cruise on the front 2. I was VERY happy with that modification!

I wouldn't take the previous owner's word on the speedo correction. Your mileage may be reading off. Not to mention you may get a ticket based on the previous owner's words that the Speedo is correct.

I had the gas mileage shock last week, then thought about it. I got my GPS out and used the odometer on it for an entire tank of gas - it was easy cause I was driving from Nebraska to Louisiana. Then re-calculated the gas mileage and it was better.

Just a suggestion.

Scott.

Read the first couple of posts. Odo/Spedo and over sized tires have been cussed and discussed.

I really think something isnt right. I have an 85 Suburban with a nicely built 454. And I get 9 mpg religiously, and about 7 mpg towing about 5500lbs. Something has got to be wrong for you. And this is a heavier truck, and I DONT have a light foot. So it is not that I drive like grandpa.

Its 454 bored .030 over cam headers, etc. 33s with 4.10s and a 400 trans.

I figure your numbers are a bit low but IF all of us guys with oversized tires/changed gears, etc. actually recalibrated the speedo's and did a mileage check very few would get over 10 mpg. With a lot of work and doing the math to calculate the correct speedo correction (using GPS also) I can get 13-15 mostly on the highway but some around town stuff with my TPI motor, driving it mellow. Driving it 'normal' (using the loud pedal for what I built the motor to do - have fun) reality is closer to 10 all the time.

Think the only real solution for us is not driving these things - get a daily driver that is fun to drive and drive it. That is what I am doing shortly..........IROC's get about 20 mpg for example........and are a blast to drive. Now that won't help you snow belt folkst, but S-10 4x4's with 4.3's get around 20 mpg also...........all depends on if you really want mileage or not. A BBC is wonderful but they are not going to get good mileage unless you are going downhill with the motor shut off
shocked.gif
..............especially in a lifted truck with 35's and the aerodynamics of a barn. I've owned two BBC vehicles (a '71 Camaro SS and a '75 454 Blazer) and the grin factor is extremely high but at the cost of petrol.

Yeah, this motor is rebuilt, bored, Comp Cam (260 cam), 400, 4.10 gears, blah, blah, blah. Runs very good and has lots of power when I want it.
laugh.gif

No black smoke bellowing out of the exhaust either.

I have seriously considered locating a 454 out of a newer truck complete with the F.I. and computer, etc. Just need the $$$ for a project like that.

I'm prolly gonna take it to a friend of mine who has a repair shop and let him look it over. May have him fool around with the carb and timing to see what he can find. He knows his sh!t.

I used to drive this truck everyday for my drywall/remodeling business. I drove it to Salina every day (40 miles one way) and filled up gas about every other day.
tongue.gif
Needless to say, that month on my gas card was like a brand new car payment or even a mortgage payment too.
