Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Took my Blazer into a Brake shop since I can't get them to hold pressure..
Here's what they told me I needed and wanted to charge me if they were to do the work..
1. New shoes $126.10
2. Drum's.. they checked tolerances and found them out of spec.. ............$528.26
3. Wheel cylinders .... 2 of them needed $ 126.04
4. Axle seal .............. $29.96
5. Hardware kit..........$24.99
Okay..here's my question.. And my assumption is I'm getting screwed..
Can I buy the part's cheaper? What are the going prices for these parts... ?
And if the part's are easy to replace.. I'm going to do it myself.. ?
I mean.. $528 dollars for 2 drum's? What the !!!!!!!!

According to LMC Truck.com (1-800-222-5664) the shoes run-$39.95, the drums,$59.95, the wheel cylinder-$22.95 each. It sounds like the dude at the brake shop ain't gettin any at home, and needs to screw his costumers. Did he at least offer to give you the reacharound? The parts are not really that expensive, I would do the job yourself. I hope this helped.

check local parts store cuz mine is online for all the parts atmost my drums are $121 each wheel cylinders $25 each axle seals $1.99 each harware $10. It's not that hard to do just remember only do one side at a time if you change the brake shoes or the wheel cylinders. Is there any brake fluid leaking out on to the inside of the rear tires? if not the cylinders should be fine

Are the prices on each item including the labor for the install? If not, they may be purchasing all the parts from the dealership. The total does sound high, unless it includes the labor. Shop labor around here is aprox. 55.00 per hour. But in my opinion, I would do the work myself, buy the parts at the parts store. Should cost you around 160.00-200.00 to do it.

Keep it simple

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Nope.. labor was a seperate cost... of 158.00 .
I thought so.. oh well.. back to the old drawing board..
I'm starting to regret my 14 bolt swap with the price of part's already...

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Don't forget sales tax. The guy apparently thought you fell off a turnip truck. Get a couple of other estimates, get another opinion on the thickness of the drums, then plan on doing it yourself. As far as the drums go, there are always junkyards, and fellow board members.

Rocko, when I had the drum off to inspect all the insides, they looked thick and fine to me.

Those prices do seem a little "out there".

I will check at my parts store to see what prices to expect if I could get them. I do know they won't be anywhere near what you quoted.

Check back here tomorrow afternoon and I will get the price for all the parts you noted above.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

You are getting very screwed. Granted I get stuff under jobber from my dad but I"m getting my rear shoes, wheel cylinder's and all hardware to completely rebuild the brakes for $20 for my 14 bolt. Typically I think the kit would be around $40-50.

every thing you listed is only an after noon of work. the pads can be tricky, just jack it up and take of both drums and wheels, then do one side at a time so that you can cheat and look at the other side, and buy a brake tool its like $7 and a great thing to have around especially after one of the springs comes launchin out of your needle nose pliers into your face.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

A friend of mine took his suburban to a Midas here in Tucson. They told him 1500 for a total brake job! He told them to get lost, they said Oh alright how about 1000 even then. He told them to get lost. He bought all the parts at Autozone and we did it, beer included for 250 bucks! So yes, he's trying real hard to screw you.

That jeep thing? Yah I understand it....... Like my Blazer? http://community.webshots.com/user/blazerk5

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

sounds like that shop is hurting for work you can get drums at checker or autozone for about $50 bucks a piece and a set of shoes for $20 bucks. cylinders are cheap also. sounds like they got some bills to pay for to me. I suggest doing your self it real easy to do. just my .02 cents.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

You will always pay more for the parts if you go to a shop. They buy the parts then mark them up, just part of the business. If you caan do them yourself go for it.
