Brake part's questions.. am I getting screwed?

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

It'll cost a little more being a one-ton axle - I paid $65.00 for the shoes on my old 10.25 Ford/Sterling at Autozone, and $65 a pop for the drums.

Special thanks to those lost from IAFF Locals 94 and 854 - You shall never be forgotten

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Hey Charles, hows everything going?

Don't take your truck back to whoever told you this! He's trying to do everything he can get away with on your truck.

I wouldn't worry about the drums. I know a place that will turn them for you up in my neck of the woods. They turned my rotors when they were .001 of an inch outside of their specs.

Buy the shoes and wheel cylinders and do them yourself.

As far as the axle seal, did you look at the spindle? Or did they just tell you that it needed to be replaced?
If it's just the seal, get one at Autozone for $1.99, or go for the Napa seal for $4.99 (if I remember correctly). Bring the truck to my place and we can press the new one in in about 5 min's.

If the spindle has that groove like mine did, you'll need to get the speedi sleeve kit from Napa ($35-$40) to fix the leak. It's real easy to install, takes about 10 min's once you have the drum off.

Why did he say to replace the hardware? Are the springs and adjuster's in bad shape?

Gimme a call if you wanna spend a day doing this stuff, you know I'm always up for doing a little work on a fellow blazer

Thomas.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Did he give you some complementry KY with that quote?
SCREW THAT. I could rebuild the whole system with a rebuilt Master for cheaper.
Master with liftime from the zone $35.
Wheel cylinders from zone or Pep girls $12 each.
Calipers rebuilt lifetime $15 pep girls.
Raspesto gold brake pads front $35 Pep girls
Liftime rears from the zone $29.
adjusters $10 for a pair zone
Drums for the zone $60
Discs I have not had to replace so not sure on them.
I guess about $60
Quart of fluid, Castrol good stuff meets DOT 4 $7
Vac bleeder kit $25 (hand dandy tool)
Both my trucks will give you nose bleeds they stop so well.

I don't need no damn shop manual, I got a pornographic memory.

Ahh didn't know you had a 14. Drums and shoes are a little more but still thats out there. May have to go to NAPA for the Drums. Take them with you and they can check them to see if they are out of spec.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Let's stop wondering about prices for a moment and look at the root cause of the problem that you took the truck into the shop for in the first place. Brake shops make money selling parts. Any time you pull into one, they want to replace everything that has anything to do with the brakes. Rotors, calipers, drums, etc. Most folks don't have a clue and certainly don't want to endanger their families by driving around with "bad brakes". So they get out the Visa card and pay for a serious screwing, but leave satisfied that they now have perfect brakes.

Did this guy even pull the drums? That's a big job on a full-floater rear. You have to pull the axle shafts and remove the outer wheel bearings to get the drum off so you can measure it to see if it needs to be replaced.

In your original post you say that the brakes "won't hold pressure". This has NOTHING to do with the brake drums or shoes. If you can't see brake fluid leaking from a brake line or wheel cylinder, then most likely your master cylinder has an internal leak. We're talking about a part that costs about $30 at most any parts store. The fluid has to be going somewhere if the pressure is dropping. If there's no external leak, then there has to be an internal leak.

Can you detail what you mean by "Won't hold pressure"? Does the pedal slowly sink to the floor? If yes, then you need a new master cylinder. (Assuming there's no leaks you can see anywhere else).

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Hey rocko, are you doing this because since your conversion you can't get a good 'pedal feel'? If so, might want to have the system power bled..........worked wonders for me.

You ARE getting an attempted screwing on those parts. Try another place, ask someone, anyone for help.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

The shop pulled the drum's.. so I saw inside.. both rear wheel cylinder's are shot..and have leaked brake fluid all over the inside of the drum and brake shoes..
Rear seal is Fine.. I told him that.. cause it's not leaking fluid out of it..
When I say it's not holding pressure.. the pedal is real mushy.. and i have to slam it to the floor to use the reserve braking system...
Stoop.. Thanks.. I'll gather up all the parts and head on over your place.. when is good for you..
I'm home til they call me up again.. My unit is playing the rotation thing will all our people.. so i have some time off for now..

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Sounds like you just need to replace the cylinders. They are about 15 bones each. There are 2 bolts for each one and the 3/8 flare fitting from the hard line. Take the drum off, remove the hard line then the 2 bolts, replace with the new cylinder, get the hard line started, then tighten down the 2 bolts. Then tighten down the hard line, hub back on. Bleed the lines, your ready to go. About 1 hours worth of work, maybe 2 if your lollie gaggin.

Well, I would like to hit the slab on Saturday, so let's do this either tomorrow, or Friday evening. Sound good to you?

Do you want to go to the slab with me on Sat? Probably head out there around 9am or so, and return around 4pm.

Gimme a call tonight around 7pm or so, I should be home.

Thomas.

I would get a second opinion, or better yet, have Stoopalini help you like he offered.

You are better off buying all this stuff and doing it yourself.

Well Thomas.. I'd love to go.. but now I'm being officially activated for 2 years starting Saturday..
So.. Now Katie goes on the backburner for awhile.. til i get everything figured out.. for example "time off" and scheduling.. Hopefully I can get some weekend's off to do some off-roading..
Man.. I'm not sure what's going to happen now.. with my house, trucks.. relationship... Just hope my g/f can bear with me being activated..
Justin..
Thanks for the offer.. but my truck isn't going to be worked on in awhile... if things get worse.. I may just sell it.. and buy something economical to commute back and forth from Hood to home.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Sounds like you need to get the brakes power bled. I had to do that with mine. Took it to Just Brakes
wink.gif
cause I knew I could get it cheap...also knew they were going to try to tell me a bunch of other stuff is wrong...I've heard stories about that place, but decided to try my luck...I just told them I had to get it home and park it, then I'd bring it back the next week after I get paid so they could do all that other stuff it supposedly needed...which I would never do. I'm the only person I have ever known that got out of Just Brakes for $27...

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

Rocko, I just did the conversion on my axle which was a new unused surplus 14 FF with 13" drums. I removed the hubs for my rotors but I have drums, backing plate with complete brake asmb. and e-brake cables. If you can arrange to pick them up or get someone to deliver them you can have them for $50 complete. They are to much hassle to package and ship.

Re: Brake part\'s questions.. am I getting screwed?

I just bought the following for 428.00 with a few other parts...from Napa... I got them at a discount so they are lower than Napa's prices. All of these were for their premium lifetime products, not their cheaper white box ones.

New loaded calipers
New rotors
New drums
New shoes
hardware kit
New bearings and seals
I paid a guy $80.00 to install them, but ended up not needing rears...so he knocked it down to $50.00.. they were just out of adjustment, and I needed a master cylinder. I picked up a master cylinder with power booster last night for $140.00 at Napa, got a credit for my returned parts and he is installing this for 40.00. Brakes on these are not hard, nor is installing a new master cylinder etc. Oh yeh, he also installed my new warn hubs for this price too.
