Brake reservoir leak

Just got my 89 back driving yesterday and noticed a problem after a little while. smoke was coming from underneath the hood. Looked forever to figure out what it was couldn't figure it out. Drove it some more and then realized we I popped the hood that it's brake fluid. after furthur investigation it appears to be leaking from where the master cylinder joins the plastic reservoir. It's not coming out from the lid as I checked that and it doesn't leak if it's just idling. Only thing I can figure out is that it's leaking when the brakes are pressed. I've never heard of one leaking from this spot happen to anybody else before. Is it just an o-ring or something I can replace right there or what's my best plan of action. any advise would be appreciated

Yea, they can dry out. You can usually buy the rebuild kits for them from Napa or wherever that will have all the little o-rings and seals.

so NAPA does sell a rebuild kit to fix that?

Yea, all the parts stores should. At least they all used to. Its been a few years since I have bought one though.

Talked NAPA and a couple other places, but no luck. Keep going back to the same thing: gonna have to buy another master cylinder. Really don't want to cuz my master cylinder is fine, I don't see any other way though. Gonna break it down and see if I can remove old o-ring and find a new one, but if that fails I guess it's master cylinder time

There it is from Autozone. If you dont have one close by, maybe Napa or someone can cross reference the part numbers. The bad thing is, its 23 bucks. You can Also just get a new reservoir http://www.autozone.com/N,14400749//shopping/partTypeResultSet.htm

for 13 bucks... and it most likely comes with the orings.

Looks like the Napa part number should be 1737 and it runs about 27 bucks... Special order only.

Well, I think I had my moment for the new year. Bought a new resevoir to put on and realized something when I was about to take the old one off. The rubber bonnet that goes inside the the lid had a slight tear in it. How it got there, I don't know. Put the new rubber bonnet thing in and drove it around just to see if I was this lucky and it didn't leak at all. all it was that piece. Never checked it thoroughly til then but I guess now I know. Thanks for the help anyway though.
