After I wired up my batteries in the rear and swapped in an XJ steering shaft I loaded up 2 friends and went exploring. We found a decent spot to run around in climbing hills and splashing about. Had one friend out spotting me he said I had it. I thought I had it until the truck flexed and caught a tree in the rear corner of the window. Fiber glass damage isn't too bad I could try and repair it.

Now I'm looking at options.
-Do I get a new piece of glass installed after I repair the fiberglass.
-Go to a junkyard find some glass and do it myself.
-Grab a new top from junkyard or craigslist
-Splurge and get a soft top.

Check with 84CUCV, he's in Jersey and has a ton of K5 stuff. A new side window is easy to install if the fiberglass isn't too hard to repair. A new topper is even easier...and most go for nearly free as it's the only part of the truck that won't rust.

I checked Craigslist and they seem to be asking from $50-200. Going to check the U-pull-it near me tomorrow and see how much they want for a top or just the glass. Going soft top would be nice but for the price it isn't feasible.

OK, so I went out yesterday with the best intentions of fixing or replacing the hard top. Called around and found a junk yard had a complete top for $75. The plan was to take off the existing top go get the new one and install at the yard. Once the top came off we decided to go have some fun in the trails again.
At first things went great went through some mud splashed in some puddles:

Then I started to push the trucks limits a bit too far. I wanted to see how deep the lake got. every thing was fine till the water got over the tail gate. I pulled forward and got out. My buddy thought it looked cool and wanted a picture ( which he didn't get cause he jumped in the cab too fast ) so I backed in and sank.

Took about 4hrs to get me out between needing to send a runner back to civilization to get a truck big enough to try and pull and getting the backhoe. When my buddy came back with his Grand Cherokee and tried to yank me out we broke my 4" wide strap after a couple attempts of me moving and the sliding deeper. After that we went driving and found a guy who was nice enough to lend a hand and some heavy equipment to the cause. He ended up driving 2 miles in the woods to get to me and broke a tooth on his bucket where we shackled his choker to. 10 minutes of fighting got my truck out with some noticeable damage and some that I found later.

Once out I had a tire off the bead, Bent shackle point and twisted bumper, Hole in the radiator, and low oil pressure.
Jacked the truck up took the tire off and reseated it then tried to drive. This is when I found that my Steering box pulled off the frame and my transmission was full of water and would not shift out of first or reverse. I have never been so scared to drive a vehicle as I was getting that thing back home 5 miles away with barely any steering and not knowing at the time if my tranny was blown.

Yeah wasn't my finest. After I replaced all the fluids in the diff, engine and trans and semi fixed the steering so I could move the truck if I have to I started it up to find it idle rough and blowing white smoke. I shut her off curse at the steering wheel a bit and pull the fuel filter and dump out mostly water. More cursing lead me to siphon out a sample from the tank that had no diesel smell at all. Dropped the tank and after 2 days of wheeling I emptied damn near 25 gallons of water out of a 25 gallon tank.
As it sits now I am waiting for a new sending unit for the truck. my fuel gauge never worked so now seemed like a good time to replace it. especially after I stomped on it a few times.:angry1:

I feel your pain. I had to learn the hard way that sand and water do not mix, although I think you have me beat.

I sunk mine in a river and broke a bunch of stuff. Front spider gears & carrier, brakes were messed up and full of rocks and sand, both diffs full of river water, all bearings and seals were destroyed. It was a mess and I don't think I will play in the water/sand anymore, but who knows :haha:.

That sucks, my front diff came out thick and black. Haven't checked the bearings yet, I was planning on a re-gear soon anyway. I'm definitely not done in the water just not so deep intentionally.

Oh im sure I will too, just going to be a lot more careful in wet sand. I really like your K5 by the way. CUCV's are sweet :waytogo:

Got the truck running again yesterday. Its been hard to get anything done to it with working night shift recently. I took a video of the rear when I changed the oil because it was so strange looking to me. the front just came out creamy but this looks like wet concrete and only looked angry when blasted with brake cleaner.

I have a Camo painted top if you want it. I'm in central ct. If you want to take the drive to get it you can have the top for nothing. Could use some touch up and a good hosing down but seems pretty solid. I also have a 6.2 sitting in my garage with new alternator and glow plugs that's going to be scrapped probably, pull some parts for cheap as hell if you like.

And damn that fluid is nasty as hell.

Appreciate the offer man, but I think I'm just going to go with a junkyard find and rattle can it OD green.
