Interesting, I've never had trouble with that but I've only messed with a handful of manifolds. I always wondered how the exhaust manifold on the C10 was broken like it was when I bought the truck, it would make a lot of sense if it was from someone getting carried away with a spreader.

I have used one a couple of times. Sure beats fighting a manifold the holes won’t line up on.
I think the later ones were more prone to needing them. I don’t know if there was a change in the metal or just the design allowed it to happen. I’ve had early manifolds that actually had a chunk connecting the ends to the middle ports that never moved.
Well got lucky today . Just 2 new down pipe gasket rings . And 6 new nuts . . Less than 20k miles and shot on them old ones . Parts left over bonus .
and new truck has a newer version in the bumper of your dads old 8k .
