budget beater - . . . HOLMES 220 single line boom wrecker install starting ..

oh they tried . 1 side top lip bent up 2 spots and 1 2x4 broken length wise . but all was still inside and just as you sent it . :waytogo:

Got a realy weird old badge for the wrecker . Its the correct 220 for my conversion.. but its made of brass not aluminum . Its even got the holmes tow truck vintage group stumped .

when i make the cable tension plate for the drum i will be recycling a pair of dana 60 king pin springs . guy i use to work with wanted a pair for his and he said it was just right and worked better than many off the shelf so called HD springs .

Got my 3/16" plate out to make my mounts like the factory did .
I know this isn't your first rodeo and I appreciate your skills but 3/16 seems a bit small for this.
The factory used 3/16th?

Its a stright line pull load with no side loading or down load like we do with reg use winches . There is 8 3/8" bolts 4 per side to the plates . Then the plates to wrecker frame is 8 1/2" bolts . I might add in a set of cross tie rods .

I have no clue what size they used as i have never seen one first hand . Just going off a few pics i could find and original drawings from install book .

well we all know how it goes . . . now i got that ramsey from @mrk5 what did i find semi local . . . .

the even more correct narrow width drum version that would be correct for this conversion job . well i am not passing it up so i paid for it today and should ship out friday or monday .

now do i leave it as 100ft of cable std drum or swap down to the narrow 85ft of cable drum ? ? ?

Personally, I'd probably be too lazy to do the mounting work again if the first one doesn't cause any issues.

i think mrk5 is biased in his choice of winches :haha:

maybe i will just add a 2nd winch as a low line drag winch and being closer to the tail the few feet shorter wont be a problem . and there is always the extra 100ft coil of line to have handy as an extension line :deal:

Another one showed up today . The real correct unit with narrow drum .

I have to re seal it and clock the motor the correct way .

I plan to swap it as the width of the drum to angle of the cable has a lot to do with how the cable wraps and feeds on the drum its called the FLEET ANGLE . I will make a mount for the std width drum from mrk5 and use it as a low line winch .

got to love this old crap or we wouldn't all be here ......

ramsey winch gasket and seal kit they told me to run as per my pics with info tag on it . . . not correct . so more digging found they had a massive flood 8+ years ago and lost all old info . so the 2 tech guys that have been there the longest get overwhelmed with old info questions . . . well ether i have a mut winch or this is so old its not funny . but for now i have extra seals local on the way and i can make 1 old gasket work for now .

i just want this done . . and 80.00 for 3 seals and 4 gaskets is FU*KING CRAZY :angry1: and this wrong kit i am missing a gasket and 2 of the correct seals but left with 2 wrong seals .

the warn 8274 winch tho got its parts order today delivered and were building that out as i wait for the ramsey parts info .

talked with a guy and he said if you have a keyway shaft motor = 2.5hp .
if its a splined shaft motor factory its the newer 4hp motor .
and the XP winch motor upgrade = like 6 or 6.5 hp but watch the cable size . it needs to be 3/8" as the smaller original 5/16" will break .
