Budget spare tire and hi-lift mount *pics*

I finally got my fullsize spare mounted on a wheel and strapped down in the bed...

What do you guys think for mounting my Hi-Lift? I bought their mounting brackets and used them for a while but they seemed like more of a hassle and the whole setup seemed kind of flimsy... anyways, any ideas for safely securing it alongside my spare?

That's a clever idea for your spare so long as you don't need to carry something flat in the bed. I mean if you pull the tire you still have the loops in the way. There are recessed tie down hooks you could have installed which would make the bed flat for hauling stuff but it would have cost you more also.
 
looks good , I'd back up those ubolts a bit more that sheetmetal tears easily

also your out there in the sun those nylon straps rot prtty quick so keep an eye on them

Yeah I know what you mean but I never haul with this truck since I have the k3500... heck I'm ditching the bed all together down the road so I thought this was a good temporary fix.
I looked at some recessed D-rings but they were $25 a piece and would have required some extensive cutting in the floor compared to these.
These little u-bolts were a couple bucks and the straps were $5 a piece (and they are the slick roll up kind so I don't have any extra strap flopping around). ;)
I wanted to go as cheap as possible since it's open to the elements as well as open to thieves... I'm planning on putting a cable/lock through the wheel and through one of my tie-downs in the corner of the bed before I pull it out of the garage....

You think the pieces I put behind it aren't big enough? I'll keep an eye on them...
I was thinking about rot too but more on the tire than the straps... I'll try to track down/make a cover for at least the tire though.
 
yeah It would be better to put something with a little more surface are those beds flex alot . not to mention boucing around at the sand dunes . good Idea though

what I did in my truck was used Eyebolts to anchor my groovy 70's rollbar so I have tose for tieing down my cooler , toolbox and gas cans I also use them to tie down my YFZ450 when I go to the dunes .


So how'd the heater delete turn Out???
 
thats a good idea i might have to do that...last time out mine slid all over the place, i used just a ratchet strap but it didnt last long bouncing around..
 
Good idea. I put eyebolts near the front corners and in front and back of the wheel wells. They get used all the time for securing loads to the dump, wood, tool boxes, etc, etc. You can never have too many tie down points in a truck bed.

Pretty good, I'm still working on it. The only thing I have left is to pull the control box out of the dash (I think I'm going to stick my CB in it's place)... but other than that it's done.
 
I mounted my hi-lift jack in my bluggy with bolts welded to the side of the bed, and the bolts slip through the holes on the hi-lift and then I tighten them bown with nuts.
 
I was thinking of something like that (even using the mounting brackets I bought specifically for Hi-Lifts) but I was concerned that all that weight hanging off the thin sheet metal of the bed would eventually pull them out.

I've got some time this afternoon so I'm going to mess around with it and see what I can come up with...
 
Keep in mind that the top bedrail sides are double or triple layer steel. That should be plenty for support without working the steel.
 
Oh, good idea. I did notice it was quite a bit thicker along the rails...

That lock isn't going to do much good if someone just pulls the cotter pin and takes everything but the base.

Yeah the lock is a work in progress, I was tired and just tossed it on there for tonight (the truck is in the garage so it's safe)...

I'm sort of in a toss up, I like the cable because it's quiet but with a 1/2" socket someone can undo the clamps and slip it all apart... a chain would be ideal but it's noisy and I guess nothing will stop bolt cutters.
I'll brainstorm a better lock setup and post up pics...

Is that bent up angle iron? How easy is to take off and put on?

Nope just bent up 1 1/4" x 1/8" flat steel... you can get it at any hardware store.
I'm not sure why you'd want to take it off but if you had to it's easy, just a bolt on top and a bolt through the bed and it's off.
 
Oh, sorry I misunderstood you.

It's easy... the bolts that stick through are fastened to the flat stock so they don't sag when you start taking the wing nuts off so all you have to do is take the nuts off and slide the jack out straight and you're good to go.

I'm thinking of drilling a hole through the end of the bolts so I can put a coder pin through the end to keep the wing nuts from backing off but I'll keep an eye on them and see if it's necessary.
