buggy build thread.. F-ING TRANSMISSIONS

Why are you breaking the bell housing? I can see burning it up but there is some other issue if the bell housing is breaking. Loose mount, misaligned or hitting the end of it really hard other then that it should not be happening.

Humm, Agreed. I would be taking a long look at motor/trans/transfer case mounts for uneven clamping (poly in one place and rubber in another or solid mount). Drive shaft legnth to ensure the shafts are not bottoming out. and interference from suspension components. I seriously doubt you are making enough HP to crack a bell, it has to be something else.

Cheers,

Rufus

I agree, my thought i the weight of the atlas 4 speed?

Both motor and trans mounts are poly, the one thing I will look at changing is moving the trans mounts inward. Right now they are just at the inside of the frame rails, I have heard people make the argument they need to be centered or right where they were factory.

I doubt the front driveline bottomed out but I could be wrong, I am waiting o the vid to see how hard I landed on the front as I was certainly not taking it easy.

Holly **** dude :doah: another one bites the dust :haha: Kinda surprised you haven't picked up how to rebuild them yourself yet, that tranny shop probably has a spot reserved for you by now. Oh well all in the name of good fun

I was certainly not taking it easy.

As expected! :D

The atlas is certainly no lightweight but I doubt you would break a bell housing by having too much weight that far back. I would expect a tail housing/adapter cracking.

I feel you might be on the right track with the trans mount. I am in the camp that the mount should be centered under the trans. My personal reasoning is that when the Engine twists due to torque if the trans is not allowed to twist with it there will be some serious torsional load put on the trans. Especially if you are talking about a full tilt boogie high RPM jump that suddenly shock loads the system on landing. Really, the trans mount is there for horizontal and vertical positioning, not for resisting torsional load, that is the motor mounts job. My opinion is you should see a nice triangle if you draw a line between the mounts. But You know what opinions are like... :D

Can you post up some shots of the trans mount so we can see what you have to work with? you might be able to add in a center poly mount and leave your existing mounts out at the frame rails. Depends on what you have going on under there.

Cheers,

Rufus

Ill post pics of the mounts later.

Today is not going well. I dropped off the trans and we got the new case ready. The k-case had some damage, then went and found another case. At this point he tells me the front pump is shot and I broke the 2 teeth.slots off that the tq converter sits on.

I was probably driving hard on it for a while if the pump went out too, sure enough I get home and check my tq and it is full of metal:doah:

So then off to my converter builder, wait , wait.. then head out the door. Now I am 4-5 hours behind .. its going to be 5pm on friday.. memorial day weekend before I even start:doah: If anything goes wrong I am hosed.

Right now seriously debating going over to hughes and just biting the bullet for one with a ultra bell already on it and worrying about my mess later. They have it in stock but the price sucks donky balls.

In other good news, during all this mess I finally discovered my issue with the 07, the ign signal to the trans has a break in it somewhere. So it has been stuck in 2wd limp mode. Made a jumper wire figuring after all the other headaches why not.. and sure as hell it works now:D Victory!

**** my life.

its 4 thirty am here and Im damn near to the point of throwing things and acting like a 5 year old. I am supposed to load up and leave by 6am.

to recap my wonderful ****ed up day.

-yesterday trans guy says he has a k-case and can have it done by noon
-then I show up, have to fetch the k-case
-told to come back around 12-1pm, will be done
- I show up and then turns out my front pump was trashed as well
-he orders front pump, should be done by 2-3 pm now
- I go grab a new tq converter being mine had metal in it from the pump
-5 pm finally get the trans
-communication 100 percent sucked the whole day on this

Now I did have help lined up from noon till 3 to get it in but that came and went with all the delays and parts.

Go to put the adaptor on the th350-- notice my threads are ****ed..

40.00 for a helicoil kit and the correct drill bit form ace.. drive to walmart.. deal with everyone trying to buy crap for the weekend.. 1 thing I wanted was a few gallons of trans fluid so I could avoid autozone.. Walmart is out:mad:

Make it back home with just a quart to toss in the tq, drill out case, add heli coils.. then fight for over an hour with ratchet straps to get it in on my own.

Then fight the atlas up there with the damn shift cables going everywhere.

Then spend 200.00 and over an hour at another walmart with the g/f to buy camping crap, food, trans fluid and what ever else we seemed to need.

Come back at midnight, she goes to bed and I tackle the drive lines, flush the coolant lines, cross member, lines, cables, shifters, floor..bla bla bla

Go to tighten the tq conver bolts to the flex plat and Its coming up short:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

This is not an issue of the not seating it correctly, it physically can not travel forward any more. WTF

early guess's so far looks like the back half the tq is different from my other one. So Even with a pry bar i can not get it going.

So is there more than one 350 front pump style or??? Really looks like something is diffrent with the tq.

I am ****ing pissed and enough to where I feel like I am just done with mom and pop shops altogether now. Yay for me my tq guy is closed on saturdays as is the trans guy. My trip is now blown over a simple ****ing th-350 transmission. I have not slept, even if i could come up with something I would be looking at sunday now and with the way I am feeling there is no way my attitude is right to even attempt to try anything.

Small rant with shops that are small, you get what you get and there is no real personal sorry when someone ****s up. It just is what it is, shops are usually messy as hell, phone handling and communication sucks, turn around sucks in most cases.

I love it when someone offers me a "deal" but this time is cost me a serious headache, my sanity, my weekend, a days work, and should i get the nt on these damned tq converter bolts just to spite myself Im sure this is about to cost me a starter or at least a flex plate because Im too pissed off not to chance it.

Sorry to hear about all your struggles Shawn....hang in there! :wink1:

We both know knitting isn't the answer.

Less than a day into that new hobby you'd be modifying the needles and they'd both be bent, broken or on fire by the end of the first day.

:haha:

true,

Just fought and bent the flex plate till it worked. Starts normal with no noises.

Plan it to start is as minimal as possible and just poke it along today, and just not shut it off, the trail is pretty short, hell i might even give the bolt a looky loo once in a while.

I will let my wheeling buddy know my troubles and if he isn't up for it ill park it I guess. Give or take some sideways action on the flat stretches of coarse.

Trying really hard to perk up, good news is its moving.. whats the worst case scenario.. its broke again..was not even down a week so no time really lost..just my sanity.

We've all been there. If it gets to be too much just walk away and knit some seat covers if you need to relax. :waytogo:

No sense in making things worse by wrenching angry and breaking stuff. Instead fix it right and then break it by driving angry. :D

Didn't make it up this btw, the big drop on the side prevented me from really wanting to blip the throttle to death. The right axle tube told me to go to hell along with my wheel base. So the strap it was for all of us:o

Had a great time, 2 days of wheeling and zero breakage:D:D:D:D:D

At just after 6am the day we left i was finally pouring the atf in:crazy: I hopped in, checked for reverse and drive and loaded it up and we left right after 7 and hit the road. So happy it all worked out.

This week I am going to tow the buggy down and have the torque converter builder compare the two for a difference and if he says there is one Ill yank it out and replace the flex plate while Im in there.

Now on the list

- raised angled floor for my passenger "/" for a foot rest

- header wrap along and or exhaust coating

-harness pads and install the submarine part of the belt

-removable top made by a boat shop with snaps, could have used the shade.
