The Atlas doesn't bolt to the trans. It bolts to the tailhousing, which is bolted to the trans.

I thought on a 400 you can use a 2wd or a 4x4 case? you simply remove the tail cone?

Yes, you can remove the 2wd tailhousing and bolt a 4wd adapter to the case. The 2wd cases don't have provisions for a support cover under the torque converter though - they just use a tin cover. And, trust me, YOU need a support cover
