Building a D44- instead of a D60-opinions and experience needed

you add in brakes and bearings on the 60 but not on the 44
apples to oranges
I am on my second d60, I am into it for less then $2000cdn
1981 d60 and matching 14ff with 4.10 $1000cdn.
average deal here bought the first one I saw in the first week I looked.
replaced spindles, bearings, rebuilt kingpins, did brakes for another $1000ish

yes I still have to do the lockers, but most people will not change out the spindles at $150usd each like I chose to.
1981 was fat axles so you really have to get an oldy to see the neckdowns
even if you had neckdowns they are not a "must change" item, run em until they cause you grief
new shafts are not very pricey IMO

if the tire size is under 35" then a 44 is all you need
I would not spend any $ on aftermarket beef parts on one unless you were racing and needed to be light
light is $$

In my personal opinion, most people will spend more on a Dana 44 trying too make it as strong as a Dana 60. I know it's expencive, but think of the cost of repairing / upgrading a Dana 44 and that Dana 60 looks more and more like a bargun.

I am the lucky one of the group. I picked up a 3/4 ton D44 with Chromoly's, CTM's, ARB Locker, and ORD Cross over steering for only $400!!!! It also has a poison spider diff cover and Rock Stomper tie rod. It was one of the best deals I have ever got. The guy who sold it to me got a 60 and just wanted to get rid of it I guess. I didn't ask too many ??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif So far it has performed flawless with 35's in the rocks. I don't think I have been too hard with it /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Good luck on your decision /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

with 35s that one is a great deal for you
just do not get the big tire bug

I would like to know your....

1. Engine size and HP/TQ

2. Weight of the vehicle

3. Tire size and what tire it is.

I have 75 K5 with a mildly built 350. My machinist figured that I would be right around 300 hp. I will be swapping in a 3/4 ton 14 ff and the D44 out of the same truck. I believe they have 4.10 gears. Bumpers, winch, and cage is the only real weight that has been added. I will be running 35x14.5x15 Boggers. I will not be doing a lot of rocks, mostly trails and mud. On occasion I do have a heavy foot. If I build the 44 it will remain open until the shafts, unjoints, etc are installed. Thanks for the info so far.

With 35x14.50 boggers it will last all day. Those are the baby boggers with the little lugs. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
